Just as the main 2022 season was, the fall 2022 performances have been mostly forgettable and underwhelming.  However this week, the Giants finally debuted one of their biggest announced prospects after COVID took away his first three weeks of the AFL, and that was definitely the highlight of the week.

Hitters

Luis Matos:

Week 4: 3 G, .157/.214/.167, 2-for-12, 0 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 1 BB, 2 SO, 0 SB, 0 CS
Overall: 18 G, .239/.276/.380, 17-for-71, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 4 BB, 17 SO, 1 SB, 1 CS

Another rough week for Matos, the team’s biggest hitting prospect in the AFL.  His hot start to the AFL feels so far away at this point, and this isn’t feeling like the momentum change that he needs going into 2023.

Logan Wyatt:

Week 4: 2 G, .200/.333/.200, 1-for-5, 0 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 1 BB, 1 SO, 0 SB, 0 CS
Overall: 13 G, .317/.500/.341, 13-for-41, 1 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 13 BB, 5 SO, 0 SB, 0 CS

It wasn’t the greatest week for Logan, but he still has quite the good batting line for the AFL, and those walks are back to the kind of guy the Giants wanted when they drafted him.  Wyatt definitely needed a huge reset after he missed most of 2022 and disappointed in 2021.

Adrian Sugastey:

Week 4: 1 G, .000/.000/.000, 0-for-3, 0 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 0 BB, 0 SO, 0 SB, 0 CS
Overall: 7 G, .391/.440/.435, 9-for-23, 1 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 2 BB, 1 SO, 0 SB, 0 CS

Not much action for Sugastey, who has felt like a third wheel at catcher for much of the AFL season.  Still, he’s done well mostly when he’s been in, other than this week.

Andy Thomas:

Week 4: 2 G, .200/.429/.200, 1-for-5, 0 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 2 BB, 0 SO, 0 SB, 0 CS
Overall: 10 G, .179/.343/.214, 5-for-28, 1 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 7 BB, 8 SO, 1 SB, 0 CS

Andy Thomas added some walks in his two games, helping his numbers quite a bit.  The plate discipline has been the highlight of a difficult AFL season.

Pitchers

Carson Whisenhunt

Week 4: 1 G, 1 GS, 0.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 HB, 0 BB, 5 SO
Overall: 1 G, 1 GS, 0.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, .250 BAA, 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 HB, 0 BB, 5 SO

Finally, we get Carson Whisenhunt!  He missed the first three weeks due to COVID, but finally made his debut in a pretty overwhelming way.  He struck out five of the eight batters he faced, as his changeup has been as dominant as advertised.  There’s a lot of hope for Whisenhunt to be a second round steal for the Giants, and this start will only fuel that hope.

Tyler Myrick

Week 4: 2 G, 0 GS, 3.38 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 0 HB, 1 BB, 2 SO
Overall: 8 G, 0 GS, 0.90 ERA, 0.60 WHIP, .118 BA, 10.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 0 HB, 2 BB, 9 SO

A run finally got put onto Tyler Myrick’s record, but he’s still putting up really strong numbers in an offensive-oriented league.  The former 14th round pick certainly hasn’t been the most well-heralded prospect.  But with this performance, it’ll be interesting to see where Myrick starts 2023, if it’s back in High-A, where he had eight games at the end of the year, or possibly in Double-A as a 24-year old to start the year.

Hunter Dula

Week 4: 1 G, 0 GS, 0.00 ERA, 0.00 WHIP, 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 HB, 0 BB, 1 SO
Overall: 8 G, 0 GS, 5.63 ERA, 2.00 WHIP, .303 BAA, 8.0 IP 10 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 0 HB, 6 BB, 7 SO

In a shortened week, Hunter Dula had a good outing, though he’s had his struggles, especially with control.  In the regular season, Dula struck out 56 and walked 26 in 46.0 innings, but he now has 7 strikeouts to six walks in 8.0 innings.  But once again, this is an offense-first league.

Spencer Bivens

Week 4: 2 G, 0 GS, 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 3.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 0 HB, 0 BB, 5 SO
Overall: 6 G, 0 GS, 0.96 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, .156 BAA, 9.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 2 HB, 4 BB, 11 SO

It was a bit of a middling week for Bivens, giving up a run but getting a lot strikeouts along the way.  Bivens now has 11 strikeouts to 4 walks in 9.1 innings, and had 48 strikeouts to 22 walks in 43.1 innings in the regular season, so he’s keeping pretty much in line to his performance in the regular seasons.

Will Bednar:

Week 4: DNP
Overall: 2 G, 2 GS, 16.20 ERA, 2.10 WHIP, .357 BAA, 3.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 1 HB, 2 BB, 3 SO

Another week off for Bednar, which brings up some worries after he missed half of 2022 with injury.  There’s no word on why he’s not been in for the last couple of games yet.
