You know, another Bay Area team in another sport had a big win, but it’s nice to see the Giants’ newest family member knows we’re watching living memes from that basketball team.  Good show, Sluggo.

On a bit of an anemic day for the Sacramento offense, Joey Bart represented half the team’s hits and more than that of their offense.  Bart collected his second double and third home run of the season, knocking in three of the team’s runs.  In the first, his double gave the River Cats their only lead of the game, scoring two runs.  His 8th inning solo home run got the Cats closer, but not close enough to win.

The game came as starter Shun Yamaguchi struggled with his control.  He walked the first two batters he faced in the game, and both would come around to score to tie the game.  He would hand out six free passes in three innings, between walks and a hit batter.

Other Notes:

  • Yamaguchi has struggled with control over his first two starts.  He now has seven walks and six strikeouts in eight innings of work, but has also allowed eight hits.
  • Jason Krizan picked up his fifth double, his second in as many games.  He’s got a five game hitting streak going.
  • Jason Vosler picked up two walks, giving him three over his two strikeouts in five games at Sacramento.  He’s batting .294/.417/.353 in Triple-A.
  • After giving up runs in each of his last three appearances, Kervin Castro kept the Dodgers off the board, though he did give up a pair of hits.  He does have nine strikeouts in four innings, but also seven walks and five hits.

RP Trent Toplikar: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO
RP Norwith Gudino: 2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO

The Squirrels got into a bit of a pitcher’s duel in this one, but ended up falling late as the offense was unable to make things happen.  Sam Long has been improving with each of his starts, and his four innings matched the length of his last start, as he dropped the hits and walks he allowed.  But he was still out after just four innings, and Trenton Toplikar had another multi-inning stint out of the bullpen.

Vince Fernandez broke the scoring open leading off the eighth inning with a home run, giving the Squirrels a brief 1-0 lead.  But in the bottom half of the inning, Norwith Gudino got two outs, but then gave up three straight singles, which allowed the Senators to take the 2-1 lead to win.

Other Notes:

  • Fernandez went hitless in three of his first four games, but now has a 5-game hitting streak, with home runs in three of the last four.
  • Frankie Tostado got his fourth multi-hit game out of 12 this season.  He’s batting .310/.340/.429 so far in this season, after hitting .259/.313/.427 in 2019 in Augusta.
  • Long has maintained a steady strikeout total over his first three starts, getting five of them in each game.  He has 15 against four walks in 11 innings, but also has allowed 10 hits…five of them in his first start.

RP John Russell: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO

Once again, Caleb Kilian showed off just how excellent a start to the season he is having.  Kilian cruised through the first five innings of the game, allowing just a pair of singles and striking out seven.  He did face some struggles in the sixth, however.  He gave up a single and double to the first two batters he faced to allow a run, and then got a little wild, with a walk and a wild pitch before being replaced.  One more runner came in after Kilian left, but it stopped there.

The Ems had the lead from almost the start, as Patrick Bailey and Will Wilson led off the game with back-to-back singles.  Diego Rincones hit a sacrifice fly, and after a Tyler Fitzgerald single, Ismael Munguia doubled in two more runs to give the Emeralds a 3-0 lead.  When the Emeralds scored again in the 8th, it was again led off by Bailey and Wilson, as Bailey walked and Wilson doubled.  Both scored on Sean Roby’s sacrifice fly, which led to a throwing error by the Hillsboro right fielder.

Other Notes:

  • Will Wilson continued his hot start to the season.  With two more hits, he extended his 10-game hitting streak to start the season.  That includes four multi-hit games.  Wilson leads the Northwest High-A West League in batting average and slugging percentage, and is just ten points off the league lead in on-base percentage.  Wilson also got to show off his defense with a game-ending double play, picking a ricochet off the pitching mound cleanly.
  • Caleb Kilian’s 6th inning walk was his first of the season.  In 14.2 innings on the season, he’s got 22 strikeouts and one walk.
  • Munguia’s 2-hit day breaks a 3-game hitless streak.
  • Patrick Bailey had his first game of the season (10 games) without striking out.  He has 18 strikeouts with three walks in 48 plate appearances.

The Stockton Ports got a 1-0 lead in the first, but that was very short-lived as San Jose was off to a rout to end their series with Stockton.  In the second inning, Abdiel Layer hit a 2-run home run to get the Giants up 2-1.  In the third, a pair of walks by Alexander Canario and Casey Schmitt led to RBI singles by Harrison Freed and Luis Toribio.  Layer then hit a 2-run double to put San Jose up 6-1, and the game was far out of reach.  Garrett Frechette had a solo home run in the seventh, and then a Schmitt 3-run home run to finish off the scoring for the day, and the series.

Other Notes:

  • Abdiel Layer hit his third home run in as many games, and is off to an excellent start, batting .300 with an .800 slugging percentage in five games this season.
  • Luis Matos extended his hit streak to eight games, and amazingly, one one of those games has not been for multiple hits. He’s batting .383/.392/.617 on the season.
  • Carson Ragsdale put together a nice bounceback start after being unable to get out of the first inning.  He’s got 14 strikeouts to 4 walks in 9.0 innings this season.
  • 20-year old Garrett Frechette had to wait a while, with a cancelled season, but the 2019 draftee hit his first home run today.  He’’s just 5-for-30 on the season, and the home run is his first extra-base hit of the year.
  • Alexander Canario had a 3-walk day, giving him nine on the season, and giving him a 14:9 K:BB ratio in 47 plate appearances.  He also grabbed two steals, giving him four on the season.  That matches his total from 2019, which he took in 59 games.
  • Marco Luciano now has two doubles in as many days.  He’s 8-for-42, but half those hits are for extra bases (three doubles, one home run).
