The San Francisco Giants have added three more of their top prospects to their 60-Man Player Pool, bringing their pool up to 56 players as they begin the “Summer Camp” before the start of the 2020 season.  The Giants added INF Will Wilson, 3B Luis Toribio, and RHP Camilo Doval to their pool.

That brings the total of Top 30-ranked prospects in the Giants camp officially to six, with a seventh, Hunter Bishop, likely to arrive once he tests negative from the coronavirus, as well as two of their 2020 draft picks.

Will Wilson was ranked #10 by MLB Pipeline after the 2019 season, when the Giants acquired him in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels.  Wilson, a 2019 first round pick, has raw power from the right side and good plate discipline.  He plays shortstop currently, but might move the second base eventually, a better fit for his defensive skills.

Third baseman Luis Toribio was ranked #7 by MLB Pipeline, Toribio was signed by the Giants in 2017.  Toribio could be one of the best pure hitters in the system, with power that is still growing.  His 45 walks in 51 games in 2019 in the Arizona League led the entire league.  The 19-year old is remarkably young to make it to the 60-Man pool, having played just three games in short-season A-Ball.  Only the extremely high-ceiling 18-year old Luciano matches Toribio at under-20 in the Giants 60-man pool.

Pitcher Camilo Doval was ranked 22 by MLB Pipeline.  Doval had a 3.83 ERA in 45 games at San Jose in 2019.  Doval’s electric fastball can range from the mid-90’s to triple digits, and pairs it with a strong slider that can be overwhelming.  He averaged 12.8 strikeouts per nine innings over his first four seasons as a pro.  But he also struggles with control and has a tendency to have games without any ability to get outs at all which deeply affect his stats.

The Giants also added Chadwick Tromp, a minor league free agent catcher the Giants to a minor league free agent contract.  Tromp played 26 games in Triple-A and 16 in the Arizona League last season, and was in the Giants’ original Spring Training camp before the pandemic.  He hit .286/.389/.610 in Triple-A last season.

The Giants had announced long before the Summer Camp became official that they would include their top four prospects on the 60-Man roster.  Joey Bart, Marco Luciano, and Heliot Ramos would all make the list.  Hunter Bishop, the Giants’ #4 prospect, was to have been on the list, but he had a positive test for coronavirus.  It’s likely he will join the Giants once his tests come back clear.

Two of the Giants’ draft picks from 2020 will also be in camp.  Patrick Bailey, the Giants’ top pick at #13 overall, will join the Giants, as many 2020 first rounders are expected to for their various teams.  The Giants will also be bringing Nick Swiney, who the Giants selected in the compensation round after the second round, at #67 overall.  Both draft picks were taken out of North Carolina State, as was Wilson, giving the Giants three members of the Wolfpack who played together previously in camp.

EDIT: Reports now indicate that Nick Swiney will not be part of the Giants 60-man player pool, as had been reported earlier.
