Hours after San Francisco Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi hinted at making a trade for a left-handed outfielder, he went ahead and did it.  On Thursday, the Giants traded with the Minnesota Twins to acquire outfield prospect LaMonte Wade, Jr., trading pitcher Shaun Anderson in return.

Wade, 27, was a 9th round pick by the Twins in the 2015 draft, and made his major league debut in 2019.  Over two seasons, he has appeared in 42 games, batting .211/.336/.347 with five doubles, a triple and two home runs.  In 113 plate appearances, he has collected 15 walks while striking out 18 times.

Across the minors, Wade has a batting slash line of .276/.389/.407 across five seasons.  In 2019, Wade spent most of his time at Triple-A, batting .246/.392/.356.  He’s had some problems making contact in Triple-A, but had a .292/.394/.417 batting line across parts of three seasons in Double-A.

Anderson, 26, had a 3.52 ERA working in relief for the Giants in 2020, after posting a 5.44 ERA splitting time between starting and the bullpen in his debut season of 2019.  The Giants acquired him in 2017 in a trade with the Boston Red Sox for Eduardo Nunez, receiving Anderson alongside pitcher Gregory Santos

The move addresses some positions affected by the signing of pitcher Zack Littell, which prompted the DFA of outfielder Luis Alexander Basabe.  Littell was signed to a minor league deal and would have been competing with Anderson in a large group of right-handed pitchers in the bullpen.  Meanwhile, Basabe would have been in the mix for being one of the outfielders on the major league roster.

Wade was ranked by Baseball America as the Twins #16 prospect this season before the trade, and they listed him as having the best strike zone discipline in the organization.  He can play all three outfield positions, but has a fringe-average arm that leads him to profile best in left field.  Baseball America says his best defensive position is first base.

Wade’s plate discipline fits the profile of what Zaidi has looked for in hitters.  He has always prized hitters who work counts and draws walks.  Wade will join an outfield with three other left-handed hitters on the 40-man roster, Mike Yastrzemski, Alex Dickerson, and Steven Duggar, and three right-handed hitters close to the majors in Austin Slater, Mauricio Dubón, and Jaylin Davis.  Wade will compete for a bench role for 2021.
