The Giants played under the lights for the second game in a row, and they started to look like the Giants of early Spring Training, and not just because of the tie.  The team just didn’t look sharp, though they didn’t look unsharp enough to not be competitive.  And, there were some bright spots.

So, onto the notes!

Impressions

LaMonte Wade Jr – 1-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR, 1 SO – His first at-bat ended in a bouncer right back to the pitcher for an out.  His second time up, he hit a high and deep home run to right, over the Charro Lodge patio.  In his third at-bat, he faked like he was going to bunt twice, but ended up swinging and missing at a fastball to strike out on a full count.  His fourth time up, he hit a pop foul to the third base side for an out.

In one swing, Wade showed what the Giants wanted him to all spring.  The home run he hit was an absolute bomb to right.  Wade’s struggled with strikeouts all spring and is likely headed for Sacramento to close up some holes in his swing, but the Giants are hoping to see a CF-1B with power.

Dominic Leone – 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO – The first batter he faced struck out swinging at a slider in the dirt.  He struck out the next batter looking on his slider.  He finished off the inning with a strikeout looking, this time on the fastball.

Leone certainly wowed Jon Miller on the radio broadcast, and for good reason.  He mowed through his late inning in an ideal with, with a slider that had the Padres hitters fooled.  He’s a long shot to make the opening day roster still, but he definitely caught some attention with this outing.

Chadwick Tromp – 2-2 – Hit a soft grounder to third, that led to an errant throw that pulled the first baseman off the bag for an infield hit.  His next time up, he jumped on the first pitch and hit a looping single to left field.  Defensively, he caught a runner stealing in the ninth.

Tromp came into the game late, and while he didn’t pound the ball for extra bases, he was making contact and making trouble for the Padres when he got to the plate.  For a catcher to make noise even as a backup, that’s enough.  The strong arm to catch a runner was just the cherry on top.

Jason Krizan – 2-3, 1 2B – In his first at-bat, he hit a sharp single to right.  His second time up, he flew out to center field.  His third at-bat, he hit a double that went off the glove of the left fielder on a fly ball.

Krizan is still getting into games, and every now and then, he shows off a day like this with hits and an extra base or two.  Krizan’s probably going to be down in Sacramento, and it’ll be interesting to watch if he’s an everyday player at one position, or if the Giants try to push his versatility, particularly in left field.

Top Prospects

Heliot Ramos – 0-1 – Ramos grounded out to second base, though he advanced the runner from first.

Will Wilson – 0-2, 1 SO – Wilson struck out swinging in his first at-bat on a fastball inside.  HIs second time up, he flew out to center.  Defensively, Wilson had a ball kick off his glove in the ninth inning for an error.
