Two seasons are over, and while the prospects are headed for playoffs, let’s take a look at how they did to wrap the season up.
Top Prospect Watch
#1: Marco Luciano
This Week (High-A): .071/.235/.071 – 1-14, 0 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 3 BB, 5 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA
Season (High-A): .263/.339/.459 – 54-205, 10 2B, 0 3B, 10 HR, 22 BB, 51 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA
As the regular season wound down, Luciano seemed to get some senior-itis with one of his worst weeks, though playing just four games. Hopefully Luciano can wake himself out of it as the playoffs begin on Monday!
#3: Luis Matos
This Week (High-A): .176/.263/.176 – 3-17, 0 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 2 BB, 4 SO, 0-2 SB-SBA
Season (High-A): .211/.275/.344 – 78-369, 14 2B, 1 3B, 11 HR, 27 BB, 65 SO, 11-14 SB-SBA
Speaking of pulling back in Eugene’s final week, Matos had a very light week, notably getting caught stealing twice, when he was only caught three times in the regular season.
#4: Kyle Harrison
This Week (AA): 0.00 ERA, 0.75 WHIP – 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 2 BB, 7 SO
Season (High-A): 1.55 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, .179 Avg – 7 G, 7 GS, 29.0 IP, 19 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 59 SO
Season (AA): 3.19 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, .200 Avg – 17 G, 17 GS, 79.0 IP, 56 H, 29 R, 28 ER, 11 HR, 39 BB, 121 SO
After he got hit as hard as ever last week, Harrison bounced back with another great start, if a short one.
#5: Heliot Ramos
This Week (AAA): .208/.208/.333 – 5-24, 0 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 0 BB, 7 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA
Season (AAA): .220/.302/.327 – 86-391, 13 2B, 1 3B, 9 HR, 39 BB, 106 SO, 5-6 SB-SBA
Triple-A’s season is still weeks from ending, and Ramos is seemingly treading water at that point. It wasn’t a great week, but it wasn’t his worst, either. However, the level at which he’s treading has been a major disappointment.
#6: Will Bednar
This Week (Low-A): Did Not Play
Season (Low-A): 4.19 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, .167 Avg – 12 G, 12 GS, 43.0 IP, 25 H, 22 R, 20 ER, 7 HR, 22 BB, 51 SO
Well, the Single-A regular season is over, and that officially ends the season for the 2021 first round pick. Hopefully he can come back healthy and sharper next season.
#7: Jairo Pomares
This Week (High-A): Did Not Play
Season (High-A): .254/.330/.438 – 86-338, 20 2B, 0 3B, 14 HR, 36 BB, 127 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA
Pomares missed another week, and he may be done for the season, for reasons still unknown. Pomares infamously was sent to Arizona when Eugene had to go to Vancouver, as in Canada, and he has some visa issues related to his coming from Cuba. The Emeralds will face Eugene in the playoffs, so this is probably it for him, a season with highs and lows.
#8: Aeverson Arteaga
This Week (Low-A): .320/.414/.560 – 8-25, 0 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 4 BB, 5 SO, 1-2 SB-SBA
Season (Low-A): .270/.345/.431 – 136-503, 35 2B, 2 3B, 14 HR, 49 BB, 155 SO, 11-17 SB-SBA
Unlike Eugene’s top prospects, Arteaga finished the season pretty strong. It’s a good omen as he continues to prove that along his defensive prowess, he has some offensive upside as well.
#9: Hunter Bishop
This Week (High-A): .333/.368/.333 – 6-18, 0 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 1 BB, 3 SO, 3-3 SB-SBA
Season (High-A): .235/.320/.406 – 74-315, 11 2B, 2 3B, 13 HR, 31 BB, 117 SO, 20-22 SB-SBA
Another good finish on a disappointing season was Hunter Bishop, mostly from a 4-for-5 day last week. Bishop’s season has been marred by injuries, but he’s shown some upside when healthy, once he’s in a groove
#10: Nick Swiney
This Week (High-A): 27.00 ERA, 3.50 WHIP – 2.0 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 2 HR, 2 BB, 3 SO
Season (AA): 3.84 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, .193 Avg – 21 G, 20 GS, 89.0 IP, 63 H, 48 R, 38 ER, 7 HR, 45 BB, 105 SO
It was a rough final regular season start for Nick Swiney, who seems to alternate at times between great starts and rough ones. With the playoffs around the corner, hopefully he’s back to good starts.
System Risers
Vaun Brown
This Week (AA): Did Not Play
Season (Low-A): .346/.427/.636 – 79-229, 14 2B, 5 3B, 14 HR, 25 BB, 67 SO, 23-26 SB-SBA
Season (High-A): .357/.455/.623 – 55-154, 10 2B, 2 3B, 9 HR, 21 BB, 52 SO, 21-24 SB-SBA
Season (AA): .000/.000/.000 – 0-2, 0 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 0 BB, 0 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA
We may not get to see Vaun Brown anymore this season, which is a shame after he had such an amazing year. But there’s still a week before the playoffs, so maybe…
Grant McCray
This Week (High-A): .381/.519/.571 – 8-21, 1 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 5 BB, 6 SO, 5-5 SB-SBA
Season (Low-A): .291/.383/.525 – 127-436, 21 2B, 9 3B, 21 HR, 58 BB, 148 SO, 35-45 SB-SBA
Season (High-A): .269/.387/.423 – 14-52, 2 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 9 BB, 22 SO, 8-8 SB-SBA
It took McCray a little while to get on a roll in High-A, but he definitely finished the season with a good run, and especially picking things up on the basepaths. It’s a good sign as Eugene heads into the playoffs.
Casey Schmitt
This Week (AA): .278/.316/.333 – 5-18, 1 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 0 BB, 5 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA
Season (High-A): .273/.363/.474 – 91-333, 14 2B, 1 3B, 17 HR, 42 BB, 86 SO, 1-3 SB-SBA
Season (AA): .351/.394/.557 – 34-97, 9 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 6 BB, 23 SO, 1-1 SB-SBA
Casey Schmitt had a down-ish week for him in Double-A, though it’s a good week in general. Schmitt could be the star for Richmond in two weeks, once the Eastern League playoffs begin.
Sean Hjelle
This Week (MLB): 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 2 BB, 6 SO
Season (AAA): 4.92 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, .287 Avg – 22 G, 22 GS, 97.0 IP, 112 H, 62 R, 53 ER, 11 HR, 38 BB, 80 SO
Hjelle was back in the big leagues this week, and it was his best look at the big leagues, with practically a start as he relieved the starter in the first inning and had the lion’s share of innings. It sets him up nicely for a potential graduation to the bigs next year.
Ryan Murphy
This Week (Low-A): 10.80 ERA, 2.40 WHIP – 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 3 SO
Season (High-A): 2.90 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, .180 Avg – 7 G, 7 GS, 31.0 IP, 20 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 12 BB, 47 SO
Season (AA): 9.35 ERA, 2.19 WHIP, .265 Avg – 2 G, 2 GS, 8.2 IP, 9 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 7 SO
Hey! Ryan Murphy had a rehab appearance in San Jose this week, which wasn’t great, but he was back. A big question is whether he’ll be helped a depleted San Jose team in the playoffs.
