Top Prospect Watch
#1: Marco Luciano
This Week (High-A): .211/.286/.368 – 4-19, 0 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 2 BB, 5 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA
Season (High-A): .277/.347/.487 – 53-191, 10 2B, 0 3B, 10 HR, 19 BB, 46 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA
A bit of a quiet week for Luciano, though he did pick up his 11th home run of the season. At this point, with a week plus playoffs left, Luciano just needs to finish the season healthy.
#3: Luis Matos
This Week (High-A): .238/.273/.381 – 5-21, 0 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 1 BB, 3 SO, 2-2 SB-SBA
Season (High-A): .211/.276/.350 – 79-331, 14 2B, 1 3B, 10 HR, 24 BB, 58 SO, 9-10 SB-SBA
Matos cooled off a little bit after he was having a great comeback at the end of August, but it’s still good to see him being more competitive up there than he was the first half of the season. He now has 12 home runs, three short of his career high set in 2021.
#4: Kyle Harrison
This Week (AA): 18.00 ERA, 3.50 WHIP – 2.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 HR, 1 BB, 6 SO
Season (High-A): 1.55 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, .179 Avg – 7 G, 7 GS, 29.0 IP, 19 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 59 SO
Season (AA): 3.36 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, .206 Avg – 16 G, 16 GS, 75.0 IP, 55 H, 29 R, 28 ER, 11 HR, 37 BB, 114 SO
Here at the end of the year, 21-year old Kyle Harrison looked a bit like he was laboring in his last start, easily his roughest of the year. Home runs are one of the few issues Harrison needs to concentrate on going forward, as he’s now allowed 13 this season in 104.0 innings.
#5: Heliot Ramos
This Week (AAA): .273/.304/.364 – 6-22, 2 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 1 BB, 7 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA
Season (AAA): .221/.308/.327 – 81-367, 13 2B, 1 3B, 8 HR, 39 BB, 99 SO, 5-11 SB-SBA
Ramos had a nice week as the Sacramento season rolls into its final few weeks. Ramos has more time than other Giants hitters to try to get a little momentum heading into next year after a disappointing season.
#6: Will Bednar
This Week (Low-A): Did Not Play
Season (Low-A): 4.19 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, .167 Avg – 12 G, 12 GS, 43.0 IP, 25 H, 22 R, 20 ER, 7 HR, 22 BB, 51 SO
It’s looking like we won’t see Bednar again this season, as he’s been out since June with an unknown injury.
#7: Jairo Pomares
This Week (High-A): Did Not Play
Season (High-A): .254/.330/.438 – 86-338, 20 2B, 0 3B, 14 HR, 36 BB, 127 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA
Pomares hasn’t been seen since August 28th, for unknown reasons. It’s a real shame, as Pomares had been finished the season hot. Hopefully, he can be back for the playoffs, even if he can’t travel to Vancouver as part of the Championship Series.
#8: Aeverson Arteaga
This Week (Low-A): .381/.440/.571 – 8-21, 1 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 2 BB, 9 SO, 3-5 SB-SBA
Season (Low-A): .262/.336/.416 – 121-461, 34 2B, 2 3B, 11 HR, 43 BB, 142 SO, 8-11 SB-SBA
This might have been Arteaga’s best week of the season, as the contact really came around for him. Arteaga hasn’t have a blowout season in San Jose, but he’s establishing himself as good enough offensively with the strong defense he brings.
#9: Hunter Bishop
This Week (High-A): .222/.300/.222 – 4-18, 0 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 1 BB, 8 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA
Season (High-A): .229/.318/.411 – 68-297, 11 2B, 2 3B, 13 HR, 30 BB, 114 SO, 17-19 SB-SBA
Back on the field after his latest injury time off, Bishop got a few hits but it was a fairly unremarkable week. It’s back to waiting for next year for the 2019 first round pick. Perhaps the comeback Lewis Brinson is showing with his new team might inspire him.
#10: Nick Swiney
This Week (High-A): 9.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP – 3.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 4 BB, 1 SO
Season (AA): 3.31 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, .184 Avg – 20 G, 19 GS, 87.0 IP, 58 H, 41 R, 32 ER, 5 HR, 43 BB, 102 SO
Swiney tends to have ups and downs, and this week was certainly one of those downs, especially with his control. Swiney has definitely shown potential this year, but his 2023 will be all about consistency.
System Risers
Vaun Brown
This Week (AA): Did Not Play
Season (Low-A): .346/.427/.636 – 79-229, 14 2B, 5 3B, 14 HR, 25 BB, 67 SO, 23-26 SB-SBA
Season (High-A): .357/.455/.623 – 55-154, 10 2B, 2 3B, 9 HR, 21 BB, 52 SO, 21-24 SB-SBA
Season (AA): .000/.000/.000 – 0-2, 0 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 0 BB, 0 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA
We still don’t know what has taken Brown out of action mid-game through his Richmond debut a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully he’s not done for the season after his breakout year.
Grant McCray
This Week (High-A): .167/.286/.222 – 3-18, 1 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 3 BB, 10 SO, 2-2 SB-SBA
Season (Low-A): .291/.383/.525 – 127-436, 21 2B, 9 3B, 21 HR, 58 BB, 148 SO, 35-45 SB-SBA
Season (High-A): .194/.286/.323 – 6-31, 1 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 4 BB, 16 SO, 3-3 SB-SBA
McCray is getting challenged at High-A, especially with his strikeouts, as he’s struck out in more than half his at-bats. We know what his offseason assignment is going to be.
Casey Schmitt
This Week (AA): .444/.500/.944 – 8-18, 3 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 2 BB, 3 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA
Season (High-A): .273/.363/.474 – 91-333, 14 2B, 1 3B, 17 HR, 42 BB, 86 SO, 1-3 SB-SBA
Season (AA): .367/.412/.608 – 29-79, 8 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 6 BB, 18 SO, 1-1 SB-SBA
As good as Schmitt’s month in Double-A has been so far, his last week might have been his strongest yet. It’s often said that the jump from Single-A to Double-A is the most difficult for any hitter to make, and Schmitt so far has conquered it, and put himself on the map.
Sean Hjelle
This Week (AAA): 4.91 ERA, 1.36 WHIP – 7.1 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 11 SO
Season (AAA): 4.92 ERA, 1,55 WHIP, .287 Avg – 22 G, 22 GS, 97.0 IP, 112 H, 62 R, 53 ER, 11 HR, 38 BB, 80 SO
There’s two starts compressed into those numbers this week, with a heat-shortened great one in there, as the strikeout numbers come from. Hjelle’s control is back, which is nice, but he’s got to limit the hits.
Ryan Murphy
This Week (AA): Did Not Play
Season (High-A): 2.90 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, .180 Avg – 7 G, 7 GS, 31.0 IP, 20 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 12 BB, 47 SO
Season (AA): 9.35 ERA, 2.19 WHIP, .265 Avg – 2 G, 2 GS, 8.2 IP, 9 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 7 SO
Murphy remains off the field, and probably will be done for at least the regular season with his back issues. Whether or not the Giants will tag him to pitch in the AFL or rest will be interesting to see.
