With a Saturday afternoon game on KNBR at home, the Giants didn’t start many young guys.  But we got our first look at Jaylin Davis, and in their first nine inning game of the season, a lot of young pitcher got in.  And Jason Vosler continues to impress!

Impressions

Jason Vosler – 3-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 3B – Hit a triple to right-center field, with the right fielder being able to get his glove on the ball as her ran but couldn’t hold on. (Kuiper called it an error, but it wasn’t listed as so in the official box score.)  Vosler doubled to center field for a double in his second AB.  In his third AB, lined a hit to right field.

Vosler has been the big performer this spring.  He has played almost every game, and is now batting .462 with three doubles and a triple in the spring.  This was also his first game playing the outfield, probably a key to his roster spot, but he didn’t face any tough plays.

Trevor Gott – 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 SO – Gave up a double to left to the first batter he faced.  The next batter hit a home run to left.  He then amped up his velocity and struck out the next three batters, with the first two swinging and the last looking.

Gott went from closer to off the 40-man roster mostly thanks to a rough spring.  He got touched up by the first batters he faced, but he looked and pitched angry to finish the inning.

Camilo Doval – 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO – Struck out the first batter he faced, freezing them with a change up.  The second hitter got on base due to an error on a grounder to short.  A wild pitch allowed the runner to advance.  Struck out the next batter swinging.  Got the final out with a fly ball to left.

Just another good inning by Doval.  He won’t make the opening day roster, but he is setting himself up for a good spring.

Will Wilson – 0-2, 1 SO –  Struck out swinging in his first AB.  In his second AB, flew out to right field.  Playing third base, made a throwing error on a ground ball, and another on the same play, allowing a run to score.  Made a nice play to make a tag on a runner trying to steal third, taking the throw from the pitcher.

No denying this was just a rough game for Wilson, with those two error on one play.  I still predict Wilson will be a second baseman, but this was his third game at third.

Top Prospects

Marco Luciano – 0-2, 2 SO – Struck out swinging in his first AB, having gotten ahead 3-0 at first.  In his second AB, he was ahead 3-1, but ended up striking out looking on a 93 mph fastball.  On defense, missed a ball that went under his glove on a bad hop.

Hunter Bishop – 1-0, 1 BB, 1 SO – Worked the count full in his first PA, and took a 3-2 changeup for a ball to take the walk.  Struck out looking in his next AB.

Heliot Ramos – 0-1, 1 SO – In his first play after coming into left, he attempted to catch a ball on the run at the wall, but it popped out of his glove for a double.  Struck out in his second at-bat on a foul tip.  Playing left, a double was hit to the corner, and Ramos missed the cutoff man, allowing a run to score.

We’re really starting to see the young prospects struggle against higher level guys, though many of the prospects were mowed down with strikeouts by Austin Cox, one of the Royals Top 10 prospects.  Bishop looked good taking his walk, though, pointing towards his pitch selection.

Others

Jaylin Davis – 1-2, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SO – Worked the count full, and hit a Texas Leaguer to left with a runner on third to get the RBI single.  He struck out in his second AB.

Sam Selman – 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 SO – Selman walked the first batter he faced, but got the next batter to hit a weak grounder to right for a double play.  The final batter hit a high drive to the warning track in right, caught for an out.

Ricardo Genovés – 0-2, 1 SO – Struck out swinging in his first AB, swinging at a ball in the dirt.  In his second AB, popped up to center field.

Luis Alexander Basabe – 0-2 – Popped a fly ball to left in his first AB.  His second AB resulted in a fly ball to left.

Chadwick Tromp – 1-1 – Lined a single to the right-center gap in his first at-bat.  He let a wild pitch by Doval get by him.

Joe McCarthy – 0-1, 1 SO – Struck out looking on a check swing.

Luis Gonzalez – 0.2 IP*, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO – Walked the first batter he faced (former Giant prospect Lucuis Fox).  Gave up a double to right, and the runner scored from first on an overthrow by the left fielder.  Got a foul out down the first base line.  With two out, he walked the next batter, but struck the next batter out with a fastball at the knees.  *-The inning ended with only two outs by manager’s decision.
