Eugene Notes:

  • Luis Matos continues to come alive for Eugene, going 3-for-5 with his 11th home run of the season.  Matos finished August with a .297/.321/.505 batting line with seven doubles, one triple, and four home runs.  Matos has five multi-hit games over his last seven games, with two hitless games otherwise.    He’s 14-for-32 (.438) over that span.
  • Patrick Bailey went 1-for-3 with a double, getting the team’s other extra-base hit.  Bailey now has 13 doubles on the season, with a triple and 12 home runs, and is batting .223 on the season.
  • Grant McCray was just 1-for-5 with a single, and also struck out three times.  Through six games in Eugene, McCray is batting .261 with 11 strikeouts to four walks.  McCray struck out 148 times in San Jose, in 29.1% of his plate appearances.  In Eugene, he’s striking out in 40.7% of his plate appearances.
  • Starter Nick Swiney gave up three runs in 3.0 innings, on three walks and two hits, both of which were home runs.  Swiney has only allowed five home runs all season, in 87.0 innings this season.  He still has 102 strikeouts to 43 walks in 87.0 innings.
  • Trevor McDonald had a big strikeout game, with a season-high 11 in 5.0 innings, in his first relief appearance since June 24th.  He did give up three runs, one earned, on five hits and no walks.  On the year, McDonald has a 2.36 ERA with 113 strikeouts in 40 walks in 95.1 innings.
  • Eugene has its playoff spot wrapped up, winning the first half title, and currently leading the second half with a record of 35-22 by 1.0 games over Vancouver.  Vancouver could win the other playoff spot by winning the second half, or finishing with the second-best overall record, which they currently hold with a 3.5 game lead over Spokane.  The High-A season ends on Sunday, Sept. 11th, with the Best-of-5 Championship Series beginning on Monday the 12th.
    • It should be noted that Vancouver would be an interesting opponent.  Two Eugene players (Jairo Pomares and Carter Williams) were sent out of the Northwest League when Eugene went to Vancouver earlier this season.  They, and possibly other players may be unable to play in Vancouver for the first two games of a playoff series.

  • San Jose sits in a uniquely good place in the playoff chase.  Fresno won the division first half title, and leads the second half race by 5.0 games, and San Jose is 7.0 games back.  If Fresno wins the second half, the second-best overall record makes the playoffs, and that currently is San Jose, and they have an 8-game lead over Modesto.  The Low-A season ends on Sunday September 11th, with San Jose playing Fresno, who they met for the Low-A West Title in 2021.
