After a surprise storm interrupted Richmond’s game, a 9th inning 5-run comeback led to a huge Richmond walk-off win.  And Eugene stormed to a big win with three home runs.  And the Giants farm system got its second complete game of the year just a day after getting their “first”…but there’s another crazy asterisk.

Top Richmond Performances:

  • Okay, I just have to point out that this game was crazy.  Not only did the Squirrels score five in the bottom of the 9th to come back and win, but this game was partly cloudy for most of the game, except for the bottom of the second inning, when it suddenly got cold, a light rain started, and it got a bit breezy.  And then this happened.  Yet, the Squirrels endured.
  • DH Donovan Walton led the way for the offense, as he went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a walk.  Walton now has three doubles and two home runs in 17 games with Richmond, and has a batting line of .316/.423/.474.
  • Center fielder Ismael Munguia had a key double in the 9th inning, going 1-for-4.  That’s 11 doubles to go with three home runs in Double-A over 57 games, with a .298/.367/.387 batting line so far.
  • Left fielder Victor Bericoto went 2-for-4, though with an error.  Bericoto’s batting line in Double-A is at just .196/.250/.340, with three doubles, a triple, and three home runs.
  • Shane Matheny came up with a big pinch-hit appearance and a walk in the 9th inning rally, going 1-for-1 with the walk.  Matheny’s batting line is up to .265/.392/.492 with 38 walks to 54 strikeouts.
  • It was an abbreviated start for Hayden Birdsong, due to the rain, but Birdsong was dealing in his two innings.  He struck out four and allowed only one hit.  Birdsong hasn’t gotten to pitch a lot, with just 6.1 innings in three games, and struggled last time out, walking three and allowing three unearned runs.  He now has eight strikeouts to six walks in 4.1 innings at Double-A with an ERA down to 5.68.  In High-A, he had 46 strikeouts to nine walks in 36.0 innings.
