GiantFutures 2023 Ranks: # 3 Second Baseman

2022 Performance: Wisely spent the majority of the 2022 season in the Double-A Southern League with the Montgomery Biscuits, and he put together a strong all-around campaign, batting .274/.371/.460.  He had 23 doubles, six triples, and 15 home runs in Double-A, and added two more two doubles in five games at Triple-A.  Wisely did strike out a total of 110 times in 523 plate appearances (just over 21%), but also walked 63 times for a solid OBP despite the strikeouts.

Wisely added extra value with 32 steals (on 43 attempts).  It was Wisely’s second season with at least 31 steals, though he’s not the most efficient base-stealer.

Defensively, Wisely played mostly at second base, with 56 games at the position, but played at least 15 games at third base, shortstop, and first base, with three more games in left field.  Wisely had a .970 fielding percentage at second, but was more exposed at shortstop despite a slightly better fielding percentage there.

Strengths and Weaknesses: There is nothing very sexy about Wisely’s game, but he puts together an all-around set of tools that projects pretty well.  Wisely’s offensive game is an all-around set of tools.  While he won’t lead in any one category, but he can get hits, draw walks, and will get both extra bases both inside and over the fences.  While he’s not a pure speedster, he will also be a danger on the basepaths, and could take advantage of Oracle Park when he lines the ball to right-center for a few triples.

Defensively, Wisely can play all over the infield, but he fits best at second base with his defensive and offensive skills.  He doesn’t have a lot of range, but is sure-handed when he gets the ball, and has average arm strength.  He can play first base defensively at a plus level, but his offensive profile is not ideal there.

2023 Outlook: Wisely is expected to start the season at Triple-A Sacramento, where he will be used in a plug-and-play role there, competing for playing time with Isan Díaz among others.  His profile is a match with what Farhan Zaidi likes in his players, so Wisely has a strong chance to get his Major League chance, perhaps as soon as midseason.

Future Profile: Wisely’s ceiling is not very high, and his profile on most teams may be as a bench infielder.  However, his versatility matches the Zaidi-Kapler profile, where his offensive production at many spots outweighs any defensive limitations.  At his best, he could be an everyday second baseman for the Giants, but he could be a player that plays the majority of games for the Giants at many positions.
