AAA: Sacramento 8, Reno 6

Link

Sacramento Notes:

  • The River Cats won a back-and-forth game, with two runs in the 9th inning to get the win.  The 9th started off in a 6-6 tie, and Will Wilson led it off with a single, followed by a Shane Matheny walk.  Casey Schmitt hit an RBI single to break the tie, and then a Matt Beaty groundout led to the final run, making it 8-6.
  • Right fielder Clint Coulter had a 3-for-4 game, with two doubles, a HBP, and a steal, and had an assist getting an out at the plate.  Through 11 games this season, Coulter has a batting line of .400/.510/.575 with four doubles and a home run, plus two steals, and six walks to five strikeouts.  Two steals is the most that Coulter has had in any season over his last five seasons played, going back to 2017.  His highest total was six, reached in both 2014 and 2015.
  • Playing shortstop Casey Schmitt also had a 3-hit game, going 3-for-5 with all singles.  Schmitt is now batting 23-for-51 (.353) on the season, but just one walk against two sacrifice flies, so his OBP is actually just lower (.352).
  • Second baseman Will Wilson had his own 3-hit game, also going 3-for-5 with a double, and a strikeout.  Wilson is off to a slow start, going 8-for-42 (.190) on the season.  Wilson does have three doubles and a home run, and six walks to 16 strikeouts.
  • Ryan Walker took the start, giving up an unearned run on one hit and two walks with two strikeouts.  The unearned run is the only run he’s given up on the season.  He’s given up just two hits and four walks to eight strikeouts in 8.1 innings.
  • Reliever Nick Avila was one of two Sacramento pitchers to go two innings, only allowing a run but without any walks, and also no strikeouts.  Avila’s given up two runs in 6.0 innings (3.00 ERA) on three hits and three walks, with just two strikeouts.
  • The other River Cat who got to 2.0 innings was Nick Duron, who gave up just a walk and got one strikeout.  Duron has a 1.42 ERA through five games, having allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits and seven walks with just six strikeouts.

AA: Harrisburg 4, Richmond 3

Richmond Notes:

  • Richmond’s offense fizzled while a number of walks helped lead to a bunch of Senators runs that led to the lose.  A walk in the first inning led to a 2-run home run, and then Harrisburg loaded the bases with walks before a sacrifice fly led to a third run, giving the Senators a lead they wouldn’t lose.
  • Second baseman Simon Whiteman had a pretty perfect day, going 1-for-1 with a 5th-inning solo home run and three walks.  Through five games, Whiteman is 2-for-10 (.200) with the home run, but now has five walks to six strikeouts, so he has a .467 on-base percentage.  He now has as many home runs this season (1) as he had in 89 games in 2022.
  • Catcher Andy Thomas went 1-for-3 with a walk, getting his first hit of the season in his fifth game.  He’s 1-for-10 (.100), with seven walks to five strikeouts, leading to a .471 on-base percentage.
  • Starting pitcher Carson Seymour only gave up one hit (a home run), but did allow four walks in 4.0 innings, leading to three runs.  Through eight innings in two starts, Seymour has just four strikeouts to six walks.
  • Reliever Raymond Burgos had 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing just a walk with one strikeout.  So far, the minor league free agent is unscored upon in 2.1 innings, on one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.  Last season with High-A Lake County of the Guardians organization, he had a 2.08 ERA in 37 games, with 67 strikeouts to 22 walks.

High-A: Spokane 4, Eugene 3

Link

Eugene Notes:

  • A 2-run home run in the 8th inning undid a close game for Eugene.  Mat Olsen was on the mound as Spokane hit a 2-run home run, making the score 4-2.  In the 9th, Eugene mounted a comeback with a leadoff single by Damon Dues, and Aeverson Arteaga getting hit by a pitch.  Wade Meckler then doubled to knock in a run and put Arteaga on third, making the score 4-3, but the Ems couldn’t get that tying run across.
  • Right fielder Wade Meckler went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a walk.  Meckler is 9-for-21 (.429) with two doubles through five games, and has three walks to three strikeouts.
  • Left fielder Jared Dupere went 2-for 4 with a double and a steal, his first of each on the season.  Through four games, Dupere is 5-for-17 (.294) with a double and a home run, but no walks to ten strikeouts.
  • Starter Nick Sinacola went 3.0 innings without allowing a hit, but two walks and a HBP led to a hit, with two strikeouts.  Through two appearances, Sinacola has allowed just one run on one hit, with three walks and four strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
  • Brett Standlee came in on relief in the 8th after the tie-breaking home run, and didn’t allow any hits and one walk, but no strikeouts.  That’s 2.0 innings for Standlee, with no hits, and one walk to three strikeouts.

Low-A: Modesto 5, San Jose 4

Link

San Jose Notes:

  • Speed was the undoing of San Jose, as Modesto never scored more than one in an inning, but a 9th inning run by the Nuts won it.  With the game tied 4-4, San Jose gave up a leadoff walk off of Julio Rodriguez, and Modest put in a pinch-runner.  That runner stole second and took third as the catcher’s throw went wide.  The would lead to an RBI single to knock in the walk-off run.
  • Matt Higgins, playing left field, went 2-for-3 with two walks, but was caught stealing.  Through four games, Higgins has hit 4-for-15 with two walks and three strikeouts, but no extra-base hits yet.
  • Designated hitter Thomas Gavello went 2-for-4 with a walk and a double, his first of the season.  Through six games this season, Gavello has gone 6-for-19 (.316) with a double, and four walks and four strikeouts.
  • Third baseman Andrew Kachel went 1-for-3 with a double and two walks.  The 2022 16th round pick is now 5-for-16 (.313) with three doubles, and two walks to four strikeouts.
  • Starter Carson Whisenhunt went 2.2 innings, with two runs allowed (one earned) on four hits, one walk, one HBP, and four strikeouts.  Whisenhunt has a 3.18 ERA after two games, with seven hits allowed in 5.2 innings, along with one walks and one hit batter, but has struck out eight.
  • In relief, Liam Simon went 2.0 innings, allowing a run on three hits and two walks, with four strikeouts.  Simon has struck out ten and walked two in 6.0 innings, on six hits, leading to a 1.50 ERA.
