AAA: Sacramento 15, Reno 6

Link

Sacramento Notes:

  • Sacramento blew away Reno, highlighted by a 7-run 3rd inning, and three more runs in the 4th to go up 11-0 before the 5th inning.  Reno did attempt a comeback in the 9th inning…but they were down 15-1, and even Sacramento wasn’t going to blow that lead.
  • Austin Slater continued his rehab in Sacramento, and it went very well. As designated hitter, Slater went 1-for-1 with a 1st inning home run and two walks, and he was removed in the 5th inning as scheduled during his rehab. Slater hit .264/.366/.408 in the Majors in 2022. He was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in his first game.
  • Left fielder Michael Gigliotti went 2-for-4 with a 2-run home run, his first home run of the season.  Gigliotti has a batting line of .302/.407/.465 with four doubles and one home run.  He had his career-high of home runs in a season in 2022 with seven, hit over 75 games.
  • Right fielder Clint Coulter was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Coulter has at least one hit in every game this season (13).  He’s got a .396/.508/.542 with four doubles and a home run on the year.
  • Will Wilson was at second base, going 1-for-4 with his fourth double of the season, and a walk.  Although he’s batting just .196, half of his ten hits have gone for extra bases, with four doubles and one home run.
  • Keaton Winn got his first start of the season, and didn’t allow a run in 3.0 innings, with three hits and a walk, with three strikeouts.  Winn has allowed eight runs, seven earned, in 9.1 innings on the season for a 6.75 ERA.  Winn was throwing 93-96 mph, and got a lot of whiffs on his changeup at 86-89.
  • Reliever Drew Strotman made his Giants debut, going 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks, on no strikeouts.  Strotman had a 6.32 ERA overall in 2022, splitting time between the Twins and Rangers organizations.  Strotman’s fastball topped out at 96, but varied in velocity from 90-96.  Out of 48 pitches, he didn’t get a single whiff.
  • Melvin Adón struggled in the 9th inning, giving up five runs on three walks and two hits while getting just one out.  Before this, Adón had allowed just one run in 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts to seven walks.  Adón had a 95-99 mph velocity on his fastball, but he was very wild with it, throwing it in the zone in only 36% of his pitches.  He also did not get a single whiff out of 28 pitches.

Richmond Notes:

  • Mason Black’s solid game set the tone for a close game against the Senators.  Black only allowed one run in 4.0 innings.  The Squirrels led 4-3 after the 5th inning, and the bullpen was able to hold on, led by Chris Wright’s four strikeouts in two scoreless innings.
  • Tyler Fitzgerald led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, and a walk.  The extra-base hits were his second of each type, and after eight games, he has a .310/.394/.517 batting line.
  • Catcher Patrick Bailey went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, an unlikely stolen base, and a passed ball.  Bailey is 8-for-25 (.320) through six games, with two doubles, two walks and five strikeouts.
  • Starter Mason Black had a strong game for his second start, going 4.0 innings with one run, on three hits and no walks, with five strikeouts.  Black has a 4.50 ERA so far, and has 11 strikeouts without any walks in 8.0 innings.
  • Picking up the save, Chris Wright struck out four while allowing a hit and a walk in 2.0 innings.  Wright is unscored upon after two games, with seven strikeouts to one walk in 3.2 innings.

High-A: Eugene 12, Spokane 1

Eugene Notes:

  • Well, there’s not much of a story to this one: Eugene blew out Spokane, powered by Wade Meckler’s 4-hit game, Eric Silva leading a standout pitching staff, and a lot of extra-base hits by *checks notes* Logan Wyatt.  Wyatt, Meckler, and Jimmy Glowenke combined to go 10-for-16 between Eugene’s #2-through-#4 hitters, which is generally a good sign for a team.
  • First baseman Logan Wyatt has begun to get hot.  He went 3-for-5 with his first two doubles of the year, plus a home run, his second straight game with a home run, and a walk.  Through six games, Wyatt has a batting line of .320/.452/.640 with six walks to six strikeouts.
  • Wade Meckler led the team in hits, going 4-for-5 with his third double, adding in a walk.  Meckler’s season is off to a great start, going 13-for-26 (.500) with three doubles, and four walks to four strikeouts.
  • Meckler might be batting .500, but second baseman Jimmy Glowenke is doing even batter.  He went 3-for-6 with two doubles, and lowered his season batting average to .526.  He’s 10-for-19 with four doubles, a home run, and two walks and two strikeouts.
  • The other home run for Eugene came off the bat of third baseman Luis Toribio, who was 2-for-3 with his second home run of the year, plus two walks and an error.  Toribio has gone 9-for-22 with two doubles and two home runs, plus five walks to seven strikeouts.
  • Starter Eric Silva had another strong game, allowing only one hit in 4.0 innings, striking out three.  That makes for a 1.13 ERA after two games (8.0 innings), but just four strikeouts to two walks.
  • Reliever Brett Standlee went 2.0 innings, allowing a hit while striking out two.  Standlee is unscored upon after three games, with the hit being his only one allowed so far, with one walk to five strikeouts.

Low-A: Modesto 8, San Jose 6

San Jose Notes:

  • San Jose’s late rally fell short in a tough loss to the Nuts.  San Jose went into the 9th inning down 8-2, but managed to load the bases with nobody out, and picked up two runs for free with a one-out walk and HBP to make it 8-4.  Andrew Kachel got an infield single to score another run, and a sacrifice fly made it 8-6, but with two out, the rally and game ended one batter later.
  • San Jose’s only extra-base hit came in the form of an Alexander Suarez double on a 1-for-5 day.  It was Suarez’s second double of the season, and he has those plus a triple after eight games while batting .185.
  • Catcher Zach Morgan was the only Giant with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a walk.  Through six games, Morgan is 5-for-20 (.250), but has more walks (7) than strikeouts (4) to have a .444 on-base percentage.
  • Second baseman Jose Ramos was 1-for-3 with two walks.  In seven games, Ramos is 6-for-26 with two doubles, and three walks to six strikeouts.
  • Starter William Kempner had a rough start, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits, two walks, and a Suarez error in 3.1 innings.  He did strike out three.  Kempner still has a 2.84 ERA after two games, with six strikeouts to five walks in 6.1 innings.
