Sacramento Notes:

  • The pregame lineup had Jhonny Pereda catching for the River Cats, but Ricardo Genovés replaced him for unannounced reasons.  Good thing, too, since Genovés came up with two men all and two runs down, and after a couple of fouls, he got a 79.5 MPH changeup that was several inches inside on his hands.  Genovés turned on it, driving it for a 3-run home run that just cleared the fence with pure muscle.
  • The most impressive pitcher, though it might not jump out of the box score, was Joey Marciano making his Triple-A debut.  He attacked the strike zone with a 95-96 MPH sinker and a slow 81-83 MPH slider.  It took him 12 pitches to get 2 K’s and just mow down the Space Cowboys.  I was very impressed.
  • Yunior Marte showed some great velocity, with his fastball at 98 MPH, but he threw his mid 80’s slider more than his fastball while striking out two and picking up the save.
  • Heliot Ramos, playing in center field, was 1-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts, but got his hit and walk against Hunter Brown, the Astros #3 prospect, and scored the only run the River Cats scored against him.  David Villar knocked him in with an RBI groundout, for Villar’s 5th RBI of the season in two games.
  • Michael Plassmeyer’s first Triple-A start was pretty solid.  His fastball was 89-91 MPH, along with a mid 80’s slider and a low-80’s changeup.  He gave up just one run on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts across five innings.
  • Gregory Santos made his regular season return after a suspension ended his 2021.  He had his fastball running between 96-99 MPH, and got his two strikeouts with his 87-88 MPH slider.  He also walked one in his one inning of work.
