Sacramento’s pitching staff used a lot of pitchers to get through a dominating game over the Dodgers. Starter Nick Tropeano only got through two innings, only allowing two baserunners over that span. Daniel Álvarez gave up a single to the first batter he face, but that was the only one as he faced the lion’s share of the innings. It got through to the ninth before a run came in, as Silvino Bracho came in. He walked the first batter he faced, and then gave up a pair of singles to allow the only Dodgers run.
The River Cats opened their scoring in the second with Justin Bour’s second home run of the season, a solo shot. They got two more as Drew Robinson hit an RBI double, and later came in on a wild pitch. The River Cats iced the game in the top of the ninth, with a Jason Krizan double, a Bryce Johnson walk, and two runs coming in on a Peter Maris triple. Maris scored on a LaMonte Wade Jr single to finish off the Cats scoring, and more than enough runs to win.
Other Notes:
- Justin Bour got his second home run in his 11th game. He had 25 home runs in 2019 between Triple-A and the Majors in the Angel’s system.
- In his shortest game of the young season, Nick Tropeano had his most efficient game. His shortest outing was 2.2 innings in the season opener, but went 5 in his next game.
- Drew Robinson had been 1-for-11 since his breakout night with a home run and double. This was his second double of the year. He’s now 6-for-30, and sitting right on the Mendoza line.
- Luis Gonzalez got into just his second game of the season, striking out the side around a walk. He spent 2019 in the Baltimore system with a 6.89 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A.
- Yunior Marte had a great game, striking out the side, his first game of the year with multiple strikeouts. He gave up four runs in his second game of the season, but hasn’t given up a run since, and is still working down his ERA.

In a game where the Baysox were slowly scoring here and there, the Squirrels prevailed by scoring in chunks, and in a grand way. Bowie jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but Richmond’s third was their big comeback. Heliot Ramos and Kyle Mottice each singled, followed by a Vince Fernandez walk, and that brought up catcher Andres Angulo. Angulo picked up his first home run at Double-A, and it was a grand slam. It was only the eighth home run in Angulo’s 6-year career. The Squirrels piled on in the fifth, when Angulo hit a single off the pitcher, which was soon followed by Sandro Fabian’s 2-run home run to give the Squirrels a 6-run lead.
That would turn out to be just enough, as the Baysox scored single runs in the sixth, eighth, and ninth. In that final inning, Vizcaino got a bit wild, walking the first batter he faced, and then throwing a pair of wild pitches. With that runner now on third, he scored on a groundout. Vizcaino got out of the rest of the inning, and Richmond held onto the 1-run victory.
Other Notes:
- In 2019, Andres Angulo played in Low-A Augusta and hit .210/.260/.294 over 73 games. So far in 2021 in 11 games, he’s hit .333/.368/.472.
- Sandro Fabian has only gotten into nine games, and his now 2 home runs are his only extra-base hits of the season. He’s batting .200/.200/.400 on the season.
- It was the shortest start of the season for Hjelle at just 3.0 innings (he went 3.2 in his first start of the season). Hjelle continues to strike batters out at a significant rate (18 in 12.0 innings), but also given up a lot of hits (13 hits, a .260 average allowed).
- Kyle Mottice has been off to a hot start, batting .333/.395/.410 over his first 12 games.
- Joe Marciano’s string of strong appearances continued. He now has 10 strikeouts and four walks in 6.1 innings, and has allowed just two hits.

Eugene got a little help from Tri-City early in this one, but with the way the pitching staff threw, they didn’t really need it. In the first inning, Tyler Fitzgerald came up with the bases loaded, and hit the ball to first, where it was kicked. That scored two unearned runs. In the seventh, with the score still 2-0, Sean Roby got a single after a 2-out error to knock in a third unearned run. Carter Aldrete hit a 2-run home run in the 8th to give the Ems their first earned runs, but by then, the game was well in hand for Eugene.
That was more than enough thanks to the Emeralds having an excellent pitching start, with Kai-Wei Teng striking out seven across his five shutout innings. He led an Emeralds staff that struck out 14 against three walks and five hits allowed.
Other Notes:
- Kai-Wei Teng had struggled in his first two starts, giving up seven earned runs in 7.2 innings, but looked more like the Teng of 2019 in this one. He now has 13 strikeouts against 7 walks in 12.2 innings.
- After a 2-game hitless streak, Rincones broke out with a 3-hit game, though all were singles. He’s batting .381 with a .690 slugging percentage, which is the lowest it’s been all season.
- Carter Aldrete picked up his first home run of the season, picking up a slow start to the season that’s seen him hit just .219 with a .242 on-base percentage.
- With 2 walks, Patrick Bailey bettered his K:BB ratio, with now five walks to 19 strikeouts in 11 games. He’s batting .265 with a .333 on-base percentage.

It wasn’t quite a no-hitter, but San Jose’s Ryan Murphy led the way for the best pitched game of San Jose’s young season. Murphy allowed just one hit and no walks over six innings to start the shutout, and coming back from an arguably even more dominant start the previous time out. In that game, Murphy only lasted 4.2 innings, but again was unscored upon and gave up just one hit, walking two, and striking out an amazing 11 batters. He was followed by Ivan Armstrong, who followed up his 4.2 inning scoreless relief outing with another scoreless appearance. The game was finished off by Chris Wright, picking up his third save, with three strikeouts in 1.1 innings.
Other Notes:
- Luis Matos picked up his sixth straight multi-hit game, and also his sixth double. He’s second in the league with a .392 batting average, and is tied for the league lead in doubles.
- Marco Luciano picked up a double for the third straight game, giving him four on the season. With the 2-hit game, he’s back to batting over .200 for the first time since the second game of the season.
- Ryan Murphy has 21 strikeouts against 2 walks in 14.2 innings over his first three starts.
- With three strikeouts, Chris Wright has 14 strikeouts against three walks in 6.0 innings of work this season.
