Joey Bart kicked off the scoring in this game with his seventh home run, leading off the second inning with it.  Sacramento would jump out to a 3-0 lead, but the game really changed in the fifth.  Jason Krizan and Thairo Estrada had back-to-back singles, followed by Joey Bart reaching on an error to load the bases.  Jaylin Davis followed that with a grand slam, putting Sacramento up 7-0.

Other Notes:

  • Jaylin Davis’ grand slam was his third home run of the season, in just his sixth game.  He’s had only one game without a hit since starting his season on June 10th.
  • Joey Bart picked up multiple hits for the sixth time in nine games, and now has four home runs in that span.  He also caught a runner trying to steal third.
  • Scott Kazmir made his return to Sacramento, having last pitched on June 4th in San Francisco, and he got DFA’d the day after.  It was his first scoreless game at any level this season.
  • Joe McCarthy’s hitting streak ends at 18 games, but he still got on base twice.  He has 10 walks to just seven strikeouts in the month of June, in 50 at-bats.
  • Camilo Doval made his first appearance in a week, allowing four baserunners across 1.2 innings.  It did actually drop his ERA slightly, from 5.68 to 5.63.
  • Jay Jackson made his season debut, striking out two.  Jackson was a minor league free agent signed in February.  He last was in the Majors with Milwaukee in 2019, posting a 4.45 ERA, but threw for Chiba Lotte in the NPL in Japan in 2020, where he had a 3.86 ERA.  His spring was cut short by an undisclosed injury on March 8th, in just his third game with the Giants.

RP Norwith Gudino: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO

Okay, that game was just ugly for the Squirrels.  Just about the only positive for the Squirrels was Bruce Maxwell hitting his first home run with the team, in his fifth game with them.  Maxwell is now 3-for-17 (.176) after going 4-for-23 (.174) over nine games with Syracuse, for whom he’d hit just one home run with as well.

Other Notes:

  • It was not a career worst game for starter Trenton Toplikar.  He gave up career highs as a pro for hits, runs, and earned runs allowed.
  • Heliot Ramos picked up a hit, and he is just 12-for-63 (.190) in May.  That’s compared to a .314 batting average in May.
  • Norwith Gudino struck out the side in relief, and now has 32 strikeouts in 20 innings, with 10 walks.
  • In four games since his callup to Richmond, Simon Whiteman still has yet to find a hit.  He’s now 0-for-17 with nine strikeouts, and just two walks.

Diego Rincones almost single-handedly knocked in all the runs for Eugene in a high scoring game.  With the Emeralds down 5-2, Rincones came up with the bases loaded and launched a grand slam to put the Emeralds up 6-5.  The following inning, after Sean Roby drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 7-5, Rincones was up with the bases loaded again. This time, he hit a double down the line that scored three more runs.

(That bat flip, though…carry it then flip it!)

The runs came despite a wild Seth Corry dealing with his roughest game of the season.  Corry allowed a season sigh of five runs, on just three hits but also seven walks.  Corry also hit three batters for the second time in as many games.  That led to Corry’s shortest outing since his first game this season.

Other Notes:

  • The Emeralds had three players collect multiple walks in this game, taking advantage of some wildness.  Logan Wyatt drew three walks, giving him 30 in 146 plate appearances (.390 OBP).  Sean Roby also collected three walks, giving him 16 in 106 plate appearances (.321 OBP).  Meanwhile, Will Wilson got only two, but that gives him 21 in 160 plate appearances (.356 OBP).
  • Tyler Schimpf had a scoreless outing, his first in his last three games, and just his second in his last seven games.

RP Clay Helvey: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 WP

A Kyle Harrison gem was lost by the bullpen in this pitcher’s duel.  Harrison not only had his longest game of his young career at 6.0 innings, but also had his first without allowing any runs since his 3.0 inning-long debut.  He also again showed real improvement in his control, allowing just one walk for the second straight start and just the third time in eight games.  That shutout inning allowed San Jose to take the lead thanks to a Jairo Pomares home run in the second inning, going up 1-0.

That held until the bottom of the ninth.  Clay Helvey allowed a leadoff single, but then got two quick outs.  But Helvey allowed a wild pitch to put the runner on second and then a single to let the game get tied.  Another walk and then another single, and the game was over.

Other Notes:

  • On the season, Harrison has 21 walks in 32.2 innings, a 5.79 BB/9 rate.  He’s got the same numbers for hits.  But he has 57 strikeouts, good for a 15.70 K/9 rate.
  • Jairo Pomares took just three games to get his first home run of the season.  He’s 3-for-12 with a double and home run now that he’s finally playing, with two walks and two strikeouts.
  • Luis Matos has cooled off a bit hitting-wise, but is continuing to run effectively on the bases, now with 13 steals in 15 attempts through 36 games.  In 2019, he had 21 steals on 24 attempts across 60 games in the DSL and AZL.
  • Clay Helvey allowed two runs just two games after allowing four runs in a relief appearance.  That’s boosted his ERA to 3.54 on the season, and he’s allowing a .211 batting average, a significant improvement from the .272 he allowed in 39.1 innings in 2019, mostly at Short-A.
