It was a rare off night offensively for the River Cats.  The only offense came from the first rehab game of a guy called “Grandpa”, a rare thing in the minors.  Alex Dickerson hit a home run in his second at-bat.  Dickerson was making his first appearance since June 8th.

Other Notes:

  • Gerson Garabito made his second start at Sacramento, and for the second time, he gave up two runs on four hits in 4.0 innings.  The only difference for him was one more walk and one more strikeout.  He also gave up his second home run, doubling the number he gave up in 35.2 innings at Double-A.
  • Caleb Baragar made his second appearance in Triple-A, with one appearance in the Majors on June 12th between the two.  Baragar has made only three appearances in June, after being put on the 10-Day IL at the end of May.
  • Thairo Estrada was 1-for-3.  He’s now 8-for-21 (.381) in his five games since returning from the Majors.

The Squirrels took all the runs that the River Cats seemed to not have in their game.  Every Richmond hitter collected at least one hit, and the team collected a total of 13 hits and four walks.  And yet, the team had only two extra-base hits, a 2-run home run by David Villar and a solo home run by Jacob Heyward.

Other Notes:

  • The team got its first start by a new pitcher, Akeel Morris.  Morris had his contract purchased by the Giants from the Atlantic League’s Long Island Ducks earlier this week. Morris pitched in Australia over 2020, and was in the Atlantic League in 2019.  He was last in affiliated ball in 2018 in the Angels system, when he had a 5.79 in the big leagues, and a 7.04 ERA with Triple-A Salt Lake.  The 28-year old, has 18 appearances in the Majors over three seasons, with the Angels, Braves and Mets, with a career 6.14 MLB ERA.
  • After going two weeks between home runs, Villar now has two in three games.  Villar has seven home runs but just three doubles in 135 at-bats.
  • Jacob Heyward now has home runs in consecutive games.  The four runs he’s knocked in over the last two games are the only four he’s driven in for the month of June.
  • R.J. Dabovich bounced back from his Double-A debut when he gave up two runs, and he did so by striking out the side.
  • Simon Whiteman finally picked up his first Double-A hits in his fourth game at the level.  He did not attempt a steal, however, once on.

Eugene jumped off to a hot start and never looked back.  Ismael Munguia led off the bottom of the first with a single and moved to second on an error.  Will Wilson walked, and Armani Smith singled to score the first Emeralds run.  Tyler Fitzgerald followed with his own RBI groundout.  After a walk, Tyler Flores hit a 2-run double, and Jacob Gonzalez hit an RBI single to put Eugene up 5-1.  Hillsboro nearly caught up, making it 5-4, but Franklin Labour hit a 2-run home run to bring separation back.

Other Notes:

  • Will Wilson’s 2-hit game broke a 3-game hitless streak.  Wilson is batting 11-for-54 (.204) in June.
  • Ismael Munguia had never had more than a single home run in a season, and now he has two in a matter of three days.
  • Aaron Phillips had another rough start, allowing four total runs or more for the fourth time in five starts.  After walking just one batter in his first three starts, but has now walked five in his last two starts.
  • After going 1-for-11, Armani Smith had his first multi-hit game at High-A.  He’s 4-for-15 (.267) so far in Eugene, with two walks to three strikeouts.
  • Franklin Labour had a perfect on-base day, with his only out being a sacrifice fly.  Labour had let his batting average fall to .202 through June 9th, but has lifted it back up to .240 with a .378 on-base percentage.
  • Patrick Bailey has been out since June 12th with a sore back.

RP Juan Sanchez: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO

Well, everyone else had a blowout, so why not also San Jose?  The Giants didn’t get on the board until the fifth, but then it began to open up.  Harrison Freed hit a 3-run home run in the 5th to give them a 3-2 lead.  In the sixth, Alexander Canario knocked a run in while grounding into an error, and later stole third, and then took home on an error on the throw.  In the 7th, the Giants scored five runs, including yet another run coming home as Canario grounded into an error.  Jairo Pomares’ home run in the eighth notched the final run.

Other Notes:

  • Harrison Freed’s home run was his first since May 27th, and only his second 3-hit game of the season.  Freed is 6-for-27 (.222) for the month of June, and has four walks to 10 strikeouts.
  • Jairo Pomares took just four games to get two home run on the season.  He had three in 51 games in his 2019 season.
  • Prelander Berroa’s last start only went one inning, and he bounced back to three innings, struggling with walks rather than hits this time around.  He’s got 38 strikeouts to 19 walks in 24.2 innings.
  • Marco Luciano has a burgeoning 6-game hitting streak, in which he’s batting 8-for-23 (.348).
