Marco Luciano finally reached the double-digit plateau in his home runs after a late and slumping start to his season.  Jared Dupere hit two home runs of his own for a Eugene victory.  And Mason Black is on a tear in Double-A!

AAA: Round Rock 5, Sacramento 4

Sacramento Notes:

  • The River Cats could not hold onto their lead against Round Rock in this one, as they made a late comeback.  Sacramento jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the 5th inning, on three different RBI singles.  Round Rock bounced back with two in the 6th, making it 4-3.  But in the 8th inning, a home run by former Giants farmhand Sandro Fabian tied the game, and in the bottom of the 9th, a 2-out double knocked in the game-winning run.
  • Recent trade acquisition Dalton Guthrie had the team’s only extra-base hit by going 1-for-4 with a double, plus a walk.  That’s two games for Guthrie, going 2-for-9 with a double, and one walk to two strikeouts with the River Cats.  Previously he’d hit .280/.385/.476 with Lehigh Valley in Triple-A, but also a .167 batting average in 23 big league games with Philadelphia.
  • Second baseman Tyler Fitzgerald went 2-for-5 with a stolen base.  Through 38 Triple-A games, Fitzgerald is batting .294/.363/.488, and now has 13 steals in 15 attempts.
  • Catcher Joey Bart was just 1-for-4 with a walk, but also picked up two RBI in two different at-bats.  It’s certainly been a struggle this month for Bart, but it’s his second straight game with a hit.  He’s batting .175/.262/.211 in Sacramento this season.
  • Starting pitcher Kai-Wei Teng struggled with his control again, but it didn’t come through on the scoreboard.  He allowed just one run in 4.0 innings, despite giving up three hits and six walks, and striking out just three.  Teng’s had struggles so far in Triple-A in just two starts, with a 7.71 ERA and nine walks to just seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
  • Reliever Erik Miller had a limited appearance, only facing three hitters, walking one and not striking out any.  His ERA with Sacramento is 1.93 after 19 games, with 32 strikeouts to 19 walks in 23.1 innings.

AA: Richmond 4, Harrisburg 3

Richmond Notes:

  • Richmond was able to take an early lead, and was barely able to hold onto it.  The Squirrels took the lead in the 3rd in with a 2-run double by Andy Thomas, another run in the 3rd, and a home run in the 5th by Marco Luciano for what would be the difference, going up 4-0.  The bullpen would give up three runs in the final few innings, but then bent just enough.
  • Shortstop Marco Luciano was 1-for-4 with his 10th home run of the season, though he also had his 5th error of the season.  It’s Luciano’s first home run since June 14th.  He’s one home run off of his 2022 total, when he had 11 in 65 games.  It’s taken him 43 games this season to reach 10.  He has a batting line of .218/.335/.468.
  • First baseman Logan Wyatt went 3-for-4 with a double and a strikeout.  It’s Wyatt’s first double in six games at Double-A, after he had nine in 53 games at Eugene before the promotion.  His Double-A batting line sits at .368/.455/.579 early on.
  • Center fielder Vaun Brown went 2-for-4 with a double.  That’s back-to-back games for Brown with multiple hits, as he appears to be breaking out of his slump.  Brown has a batting line of .245/.321/.429 through 25 games in Richmond, with five doubles, two triples, and three home runs.
  • Right fielder Wade Meckler went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Meckler now has gotten into 16 games at Double-A, with a batting line of .355/.459/.419, with four doubles, and 12 walks to nine strikeouts.
  • Mason Black lowered his ERA to 4.00 with 4.1 shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks with five strikeouts.  That’s four straight shutout starts for Mason Black, a total of 17.1 innings, with 21 strikeouts to five walks and just eight hits allowed.  Black’s lowered his ERA from 5.89 to 4.00 over that span.

Eugene Notes:

  • It was a home run spree for Jared Dupere to lead the Emeralds to a win.  His solo home run in the 2nd inning tied the game at a run a piece, and his 2-run home run in the 7th inning capped off the scoring, making the difference in the game.
  • Left fielder Jared Dupere was 3-for-4 with two home runs and a strikeout.  That gives him seven on a season, all in 43 games at Eugene.  In 2022, he had 15 home runs in 61 games across three levels, from the ACL to High-A.  In Eugene this year, Dupere is hitting .263/.326/.444.
  • Center fielder Grant McCray went 3-for-5 with all singles, plus getting one stolen base in two attempts.  It’s McCray’s second 3-hit game of the month, and fourth of the season.  He’s now batting .230, with a .331 on-base percentage.
  • Right fielder Carter Howell went 2-for-4.  Howell continues to reestablish himself at his new level, and now has a batting line of .286/.363/.429 with five doubles and four triples after 23 games.
  • Starting pitcher Nick Sinacola gave up two runs in 4.0 innings, off of four hits and a walk, with two strikeouts.  Sinacola has a 5.23 ERA in 15 games, with 65 strikeouts to 18 walks in 53.1 innings.
  • Reliever Tyler Myrick had a scoreless inning, striking out one while allowing a walk.  That nudges Myrick’s ERA down to 1.13, with 24 strikeouts to five walks in 24.0 innings.

Low-A: Stockton 6, San Jose 5

San Jose Notes:

  • San Jose got edged out by Stockton in this one.  The Giants jumped out to an early lead, with two runs in the 1st, and then P.J. Hilson’s triple was the key to two more runs in the 2nd.  But Stockton came back with five runs through the 5th, tying the game at five, and then a 6th inning Stockton home run was the difference in the game.
  • Third baseman Thomas Gavello went 1-for-4, with a solo home run in the 5th inning.  That gives Gavello a share of the team lead with Matt Higgins with nine home runs.  Gavello has a batting line of .237/.411/.446, now with nine home runs as well as eight doubles and a triple, plus 28 walks to 64 strikeouts.
  • Center fielder P.J. Hilson went 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, and a stolen base.  That’s the speedy Hilson’s first triple of the season, in his 34th game  Hilson had five triples in 63 total games in 2022.  It also gives Hilson seven steals in as many attempts on the year.  He had 15 steals in 16 attempts in 2022.
  • Left fielder Turner Hill went 2-for-5 with a double.  Through 21 games, Hill is 22-for-88 (.250) with 11 walks to 15 strikeouts, eight doubles as his only extra-base hits, with nine steals out of 12 attempts.
  • It was another rough start for Gerelmi Maldonaldo, as he allowed four runs in 4.2 innings, on six hits, a walk, and a HBP, with seven strikeouts.  Maldonaldo has given up 12 runs in his last two starts (7.2 innings), and his ERA has jumped from 3.60 to 5.29 in that span.  He has 61 strikeouts to 29 walks in 47.2 innings.
