There were a fair amount of moves over the weekend, unusual since the team usually waits for the Monday off-day for most of the minors to make moves happen.  But a series of dominos, perhaps set off by Monday’s start date for the Arizona League, may have caused it.

It appears that the struggling Patrick Bailey is heading to the Complex League to work on things.  Since they start on Monday, the team couldn’t wait for the usual flurry of Monday moves.  Moving Bailey down necessitated Ricardo Genovés to come up, a well-earned promotion after he’d been dominating in San Jose.  Rodolfo Bone moved into San Jose to fill the catching depth there.

The heat was on in Sacramento, and it led to home runs flying all out of the yard as Sacramento opened up a deluge upon the Aces.  The four runs in the first inning actually came on smaller hits, with a run coming in on an error, a single, and two on a double.  But the big flies started in the fourth, with a Jaylin Davis grand slam to put Sacramento up 8-2.  And then, a rare thing to happen in any ballgame, the River Cats got back-to-back home runs twice, by the same hitters each time, as Jason Krizan and Chadwick Tromp did it twice to help the Cats run away with this one.

Other Notes:

  • Jason Krizan has been on a tear the past week, with a 6-game hitting streak.  He’s 16-for-28 (.571) with four doubles and two homers.  He’s batting .339/.394/.518 with five home runs on the season.
  • Chadwick Tromp had his first 2-home run game, giving him five home runs this season in Triple-A, plus one in the Majors.  His career high was nine, in 2019, in the Reds organization.
  • Tyler Beede bounced back from giving up five runs in his last start to just two in this one.  However, he’s walked three in each of his last three and four of his last five starts.  He has 28 walks in 31.1 innings during his rehab this year, with 36 strikeouts.
  • Jaylin Davis picked up his sixth home run in his 12th game of the season.  Davis is batting .292/.404/.750 and has four doubles and six home runs in that span.  He’s also had two grand slams.
  • Tyler Cyr gave up two runs for the second game in a row.  His ERA has jumped from 5.09 to 6.41 over the two games.
  • Kervin Castro went two scoreless innings, and has six scoreless outing, totaling 8.0 innings, with seven strikeouts, two walks, and three hits allowed.

Richmond and Hartford traded runs until they weren’t.  In the first, David Villar hit a solo home run to go up 1-0, but then Hartford tied the game in the bottom of the first.  Sandro Fabian put Richmond up again in the 6th inning with a 2-run home run, but Harford tied it back up in the bottom of the 6th.  Richmond didn’t score in the top of the 8th, which is notable since Hartford scored three runs in the bottom of 8th for the win.

Other Notes:

  • David Villar picked up his 10th home run, five of them in his last ten games.  Villar’s career high is 13, which he hit in both 2018 and 2019.
  • Sandro Fabian hit his fifth home run of the season.  He had 7 in 54 games in his injury-shortened 2019 season.
  • Caleb Kilian had one of his rougher starts, giving up a season-high-tying three runs, helped by Kilian giving up his first home run of the season and of his pro career.  Kilian  has 34 strikeouts and four walks in 34.1 innings at Double-A.
  • Frankie Tostado didn’t get the winning home run this time, but still picked up two hits, his third straight multi-hit game.  He’s raised his batting average to .288 on the season.
  • Norwith Gudino had a scoreless inning, bouncing back from allowing a run his last time out.  Gudino’s been pretty consistent this season, but has begun allowing more hits recently, with four allowed in his last three games (3.0 IP).

How many times can you say that a game in Oregon was the hottest temperature in the farm system?  In a game where the temperature reached at least 108, the Emeralds persevered in a game where the ball was flying out of the yard.  The Emeralds were up 2-0 going into the third, when Tyler Fitzgerald and Sean Roby each hit home runs to score three runs and put Eugene up 5-0.  But the very next inning, Kai-Wei Teng gave up two monster home runs himself, both solo shots, to let Vancouver close it to 5-2.  The bullpen came in soon after, limiting the Canadians to one more hit and two walks the remaining 4.2 innings to ensure the sweaty victory.

Other Notes:

  • Eugene plays on artificial turf that was not made for the sun.  Kids who participated in the between-inning entertainment on the field were provided bags of ice after coming off the field to cool their feet as the heat radiated through their sneakers.  As far as I could tell, the players did not get the same treatment.
  • Ricardo Genovés made his High-A debut, and he did not look like he’d slowed down from his run in San Jose.  He took advantage of wild pitching to walk his first two times up, but still picked a clutch single to knock in two runs, and also caught the only Vancouver runner to attempt a steal.
  • Kai-Wei Teng had a very mixed game.  He kept runs mostly off the board, but gave up a season-high tying six hits, and striking out just three, one of his lowest totals this season.
  • Tyler Fitzgerald had two games without a home run, which must have been too many, so he hit another, giving him three in the last five games.  Fitzgerald has seven home runs on the season, batting .263/.352/.468.
  • Sean Roby hit his first home run since June 11th, giving him five on the season.  Roby has a .198/.318/.369 batting line on the season.

San Jose struggled in this game, as the hot weather seemed to favor the Stockton Ports more than San Jose, as the Ports hit four home runs, three of them against San Jose’s starter Ryan Murphy.  The Quakes were up 5-0 before San Jose got on the board in the 5th, when San Jose got its only home run, a solo monster shot by Marco Luciano.

San Jose tied it up in the 6th, but a 4-run 8th set the Ports apart and earned them a win.

Other Notes:

  • Marco Luciano hit his fifth home run of June, and 10th on the season.  Luciano has three doubles, two triples, and five home runs in June, with 16 walks to 20 strikeouts.
  • Ryan Murphy has given up nine home runs on the season, but had his first game without any walks since May 23rd.  He’s struck out 60 and walked 12 in 45.0 innings.
  • Luis Matos had a 16-game hitting streak broken on Friday, and took Saturday off, but was back to hitting well on Sunday. With his two hits, Matos is batting .313/.376/.458 in June, with six doubles and two home runs.
