On Saturday, Sacramento was the one falling victim to the big inning.  Two of them, in fact.  In the 3rd, it all came in one blast, as Drew Ellis hit a 3-run homer, putting Reno up 3-1.  Sacramento got the three runs back immediately, helped by Braden Bishop’s home run and Jason Krizan’s 2-run single.  But in the 5th, Reno put together six runs, highlighted by a 2-run double and a 2-run home run, and that would be enough, despite a 3-run rally by Sacramento in the 9th.

Other Notes:

  • Braden Bishop continues his career renaissance with Sacramento.  He’s 20 games into his time with the Giants organization, and he’s batting .381/.432/.571 with six doubles, two triples, and now two home runs.
  • Yunior Marte made his first start since making a single start in the 2017 season. The two inning opener role went well, at least as far as Marte’s time of the game goes.
  • Jason Krizan hit is 13th double in his 41st game of the year.  He had 31 in 117 games in 2019.  He’s having a career best season with a .327 batting average, with a .385 on-base percentage, and a .475 slugging percentage.
  • Anthony Banda had his worst outing of the season, though an error helped him.nnHe gave up two home runs for the second time this season, the last time being on May 11th.
  • Joey Bart caught two would-be base stealers, and continues to show off an amazing arm.
  • The Giants released Justin Bour, who had spent the season in Sacramento.  The 33-year old was signed as a free agent from the Angels system, where he had struggled in the Majors in 2020, but had an excellent season in Triple-A in 2019.  He hit only .213 in 33 games for Sacrament, but had five doubles and six home runs.

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Frankie Tostado hit a game-winning home run in the ninth inning.  Yep, for the second day in a row, Richmond got the exciting win.  They took their initial lead in the 6th when David Villar hit a 2-run home run to make it 2-0.  But Hartford score three runs over the next couple of innings, and took a 3-2 lead into the ninth.  Vince Fernandez walked to lead off the inning, setting up Tostado’s 2-run home run excitement.

Other Notes:

  • Frankie Tostatdo has now hit three of his five home runs this season in the last two days.  He’s 6-for-9 with three home runs and a double over the two games.
  • David Villar had an 8-game hitting streak broken on Friday’s game, when he collected two walks but no hits.  Over the past ten games, five games have had multiple hits, raising his batting average from .190 to .245.
  • Michael Plassmeyer his best game as a Giant, and one of his best of the season, going a season-high 6.0 innings.  He’s got a 5.17 ERA with Richmond, but had a 3.64 ERA with Montgomery in the Tampa Bay system.
  • Another two hit game for Simon Whiteman.  Whiteman started the season 0-for-17, with 9 strikeouts and 2 walks.  Since then, he’s 11-for-28 (.393) with two doubles, 8 strikeouts and 2 walks.
  • R.J. Dabovich struck out two more batters, but also gave up another non-strikeout out.  He’s got 12 strikeouts in 4.2 innings with Richmond.  He also gave up a single, just his second non-home run allowed at either level this season.

The Emeralds won after some late heroics and a slump breaker of a hit.  The Canadians came up with a tie after starter Conner Nurse was lifted, with a runner Nurse left on coming in on the reliever John Russell’s time.  With the game tied, Will Wilson broke an 0-for-11 slump with a double.  Wilson would take third on a wild pitch.  Armani Smith then hit a ground ball to second, and Wilson broke for home.  Wilson scored when the throw went wild on a wild play in general.

Other Notes:

  • Conner Nurse had one of his best starts of the season, and had the longest game this season at 6.1 seasons.  But it was also only Nurse’s second game of the season without allowing a home run.  Nurse has allowed eight home runs in 44.0 innings this season.
  • Will Wilson has had a slow week, going 5-for-26 (.192) over his last six games, but has two doubles and two home runs in that span.
  • Carter Aldrete made his first start in the field since his return, collecting a pair of hits.  He’s batting .206/.254/.302 on the season in 20 games played.
  • After a late start for the season, Heath Quinn is batting 4-for-12, with 2 doubles, and two walks agains seven strikeouts.
  • Diego Rincones will be returning to the Giants system soon, as Venezuela lost to the Dominican Republic in the final game of the Olympic qualifying trials.  Whether Rincones will return to Eugene, rather than joining Venezuela (and Richmond) manager José Alguacil up in Double-A, is a bigger question.
  • Eugene will be getting another promotion this week, Ricardo Genovés from the San Jose Giants.  Genovés has been dominating in San Jose, batting .338/.441/.551 on the season with 11 doubles and six home runs.

• The corresponding move to Genovés’ promotion is that first round pick Patrick Bailey has been sent to Arizona.  The Arizona Complex Leagues begin play soon, and he’ll likely work there to develop.  Bailey hit .185/.290/.587 in 33 games with Eugene to start the year.

Carson Ragsdale’s excellent season continued, setting the stage for San Jose’s 33rd win in the season.  The Giants biggest inning came in the third, as the team hit three doubles by Alexander Canario, Fabian Pena, and Jimmy Glowenke to score three runs, giving the Giants a 4-0 lead.

Other Notes:

  • Carson Ragsdale had another monster start with a lot of strikeouts, bouncing back from his worst start of the season.  He’s struck out 76 in 41.0 innings this season, with 20 walks.
  • Alexander Canario’s speed has been a revelation this season, with a steal giving him 12 on the season in 15 attempts.  He’s batting .243/.337/.428 on the year.
  • Fabian Pena made his second appearance at San Jose, and will likely make more with the promotion of Ricardo Genovés to Eugene.  Pena played 40 games in San Jose (High-A) in 2019, batting .222/.269/.396, and had four home runs that season.  He has three already in 2021 in 11 games, nine at Triple-A Sacramento.
