It was an ugly day across the farm, but there were some bright spots. Onil Perez had a huge game, as the catcher knocked out four hits and stole four bases on five attempts. Grant McCray had a strong game he hasn’t had many of lately. And two pitchers made their High-A debuts!
AAA: Oklahoma City 6, Sacramento 4
Sacramento Notes:
- Sacramento ended up on the losing end of a mini-series streak, with their third straight loss to Oklahoma City. The Dodgers never trailed in this game, after scoring two in the first inning, and Sacramento never caught up, despite outhitting the Dodgers 10-8.
- Jakson Reetz had the big day for Sacramento, going 3-for-4 with a home run and a double. That was Reetz’s first home run and fourth double in Sacramento after 13 games with the team, and fifth overall if you include his time in Omaha. With the River Cats, the catcher has a batting line of .217/.280/.413.
- Center fielder Bryce Johnson was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. In 23 games, Bryce Johnson now has five doubles and one triple to go with four home runs, and a ever-increasing batting line of .326/.410/.533.
- Second baseman Tyler Fitzgerald was also 2-for-4, but with two singles, and got a steal as well. In Sacramento, he now has 15 steals in 17 attempts over 51 games, and is batting .276/.338/.467.
- Keaton Winn took the start but got the loss, giving up three runs on four hits and two walks in 4.0 innings, with four strikeouts. Winn’s Triple-A ERA moves up to 4.56, with 58 strikeouts to 24 walks in 49.1 innings.
AA: Harrisburg 4, Richmond 0
Richmond Notes:
- Yeah, this one was a forgettable game. Carson Whisenhunt returned to the mound after his Futures Game experience, and did well, but the offense let the team flounder.
- Carson Whisenhunt only allowed one unearned run in 3.0 innings, giving up two hits, a walk, and getting helped by an error by left fielder Vaun Brown. That lowered Whisenhunt’s Richmond ERA to 4.02 after five games at the level. He has 22 strikeouts to 11 walks in 15.2 innings.
- After the short Whisenhunt start, Nick Swack worked the rest of the game, giving up three runs in 5.0 innings, on six hits and no walks, while striking out eight. Zwack now has 69 strikeouts to 23 walks in 58.2 innings on the season, but has a 6.44 ERA.
- Marco Luciano was one of the three Squirrels to pick up a hit, going 1-for-4 with two strikeouts. It basically equated to Luciano treading water for where he is right now, with a .228/.339/.450 batting line.
- Also notching a hit was shortstop Donovan Walton, who was also 1-for-4. In just three games at Double-A so far this season, Walton is 2-for-9 (.222). Walton has been off to a late start as he comes back from injury, and previously had hit .250/.340/.318 in 12 games at High-A.
High-A: Vancouver 5, Eugene 3
Eugene Notes:
- The lead changed three times in the final two innings in this one, with Vancouver taking the lead last. Vancouver had taken an early 2-0 lead going into the 8th, but a Grant McCray home run and Luis Toribio double tied the game in the top of the 8th. In the top of the 9th, Aeverson Arteaga hit a solo home run to take a 3-2 lead, but in the bottom of the 9th, Vancouver hit a 3-run home run to walk off the game.
- Grant McCray had the big game for Eugene, going 2-for-5 with a home run and a double. That gives him 10 home runs, and 14 doubles. It’s just McCray’s third home run since the start of June, after he his six in May alone. After 81 games at High-A, McCray has a .240/.332/.410 batting line.
- Shortstop Aeverson Arteaga nearly had a game-winning home run in the 9th inning, and it was also his 10th of the season. Arteaga is approaching his previous season high (14, in 122 games in 2022). Arteaga is hitting .215/.294/.384 on the year.
- Third baseman Luis Toribio went 2-for-4 with a double, his seventh of the ceiling. Toribio now has seven doubles to go along with 10 home runs. But in 29 games since his late-May injury, Toribio has just three doubles and two home runs after having previously being one of the system’s top early sluggers. His batting line sits at .228/.363/.409.
- Making his High-A debut was 2022 1st round pick Reggie Crawford, who threw a single inning, giving up a run on one hit, two walks, while striking out one. Crawford had giving up five runs in 11.0 innings in San Jose (4.09) before his promotion, and had 18 strikeouts to four walks.
- The lion’s share of the innings went to another debuting pitcher, Hayden Wynja, who had a mixed game. He didn’t allowing any runs in 4.0 innings, but did walk four, along with allowing two hits, while striking out just three. Wynja had just 18 walks to 68 strikeouts in 54.1 innings in San Jose before his promotion.
Low-A: Visalia 3, San Jose 1
San Jose Notes:
- Another bullpen collapse, and another loss in the system. San Jose went into the final inning with a 1-0 lead. But in the top of the 9th, a couple of mistakes cost the Giants, as one run came in on a wild pitch, and another on an error, leading to three runs allowed and a big change in the lead. San Jose came back with a run on Onil Perez’s 2-out RBI triple, but they could not get Perez home for the tie.
- It was a fantastic day for Onil Perez, going 4-for-5 with a triple, and a surprising four steals by the catcher, twice stealing third base! He was also caught once, for the first time this season. That gives Perez an amazing 16 steals in 17 attempts over 50 games. He also now has four triples, the highest season total of his career (in his first full season). He’s batting .320/.379/.443.
- DH Diego Velasquez was 2-for-5 with a double, his 17th of the season. Velasquez is on a bit of a run since the All-Star Break, going 6-for-14 (.429) with two doubles and one home run. Overall he’s hitting .303/.391/.438.
- Third baseman Justin Bench was 1-for-4 with an error. In three games since arriving at San Jose, Bench is 5-for-9 (.556), but without an extra-base hit yet, with two walks and two strikeouts.
- Starter Nomar Medina threw 5.0 scoreless innings, giving up just three hits and one walks while striking out five. It’s his first scoreless appearance since April 28th, when he went 4.0 shutout relief innings. Medina lowered his ERA from 6.18 to 5.63 in this game, with 48 strikeouts to 25 walks 56.0 innings.
- Reliever Julio Rodriguez went 2.0 shutout innings, allowing only one walk while striking out four. That loweres his ERA to 6.50, with 43 strikeouts to 17 walks in 36.0 innings.
