ACL: ACL Giants Black 6, ACL Rockies 5 (Giants Black win 2022 ACL Championship)

Link

ACL Giants Black Notes:

  • This was a wild game at the end.  The Giants were down 3-2 in the 8th inning, and a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom half, when Dilan Rosario hit a bases-clearing double to put the Giants up 5-3.  The Rockies loaded the bases with two out, but a grounder to shortstop Anthony Rodriguez led to a throwing error that let two runs in and tied the game.  In the bottom of the 9th, with one out, Mauricio Pierre walked and Andrew Kachel had an infield single.  Then, with two out, P.J. Hilson came up and hit a single to right, knocking in Mauricio Pierre to win the game.
  • It was very fitting for P.J. Hilson to get the championship-winning hit, as he led the ACL Black team all season.  He hit .295/.381/.563 with 12 doubles, five triples, and nine home runs in the regular season, and was 8-for-15 (.533) with four doubles and a triple in four games in the postseason.  Hilson has spent four seasons in the AZL/ACL since being drafted as a high schooler in the 6th round in 2018, but this was finally his breakout year.
  • Second baseman Thomas Gavello hit a 2-run home run in a 2-for-3 day.  The 13th round pick hit .200/.364/.320 with one home run in the regular season, but went 3-for-6 with a home run in four playoff games.
  • Third/first baseman Dilan Rosario knocked in three runs while going 1-for-4 with a double.  Rosario went 6-for-16 (.375) in four playoff games with three doubles and a home run.  Rosario hit .221/.325/.356 in the regular season over 37 games.
  • Center fielder Wade Meckler was 1-for-4 with a walk.  The 8th round pick went 7-for-16 (.438/.500/.688) with two triples, and two walks to four strikeouts in four playoff games.  In 12 regular season games, Meckler hit .289/.460/.395 with 11 walks to eight strikeouts.
  • Esmerlin Vinicio started the game, giving up three runs in 3.0 innings, on four hits while striking out five.  Vinicio made four appearances in the ACL during the regular season, with a 1.93 ERA and 16 strikeouts to six walks in 14.0 innings.
