The minor league season is coming to an end, with Single-A’s two leagues ending their regular seasons on Sunday, but one team will continue into the playoffs!  Meanwhile, Kai-Wei Teng had one of his good games in Sacramento, and Wade Meckler continues to do well back in Triple-A.

Top Sacramento Performances:

  • Left fielder Wade Meckler continues to hit in Triple-A, going 2-for-5 with a triple and a strikeout.  In four games since returning to Sacramento, Meckler has had two hits in each of them, but the triple is his first extra-base hit, and his first triple in Sacramento.  It’s his fourth overall.  He’s hitting .419/.528/.581 in 14 games at Sacramento.
  • Shortstop Tyler Fitzgerald was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks.  Fitzgerald now has 19 doubles to go with his 19 home runs and four triples, with a batting line of .280/.348/.494.
  • Third baseman Armando Alvarez went 2-for-2 with a walk, a HBP, and a sacrifice fly.  After 66 games, Alvarez has a .316/.377/.590 batting line in Sacramento.
  • Starting pitcher Kai-Wei Teng had one of his great games again, throwing 5.0 shutout innings, striking out eight batters while allowing two hits and three walks.  That lowers his Triple-A ERA to 3.52, and now has 87 strikeouts to 38 walks in 69.0 innings.

Top Richmond Performances:

  • First Baseman Brady Whalen went 1-for-3 with a strikeout, getting one of Richmond’s only two hits. Whalen has a batting line of .276/.321/.439 after 33 games in Double-A.
  • Starting pitcher Ryan Murphy continued his excellent run with 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and one walk, with five strikeouts.  Murphy now has three consecutive scoreless starts of 5.0 innings each, with 14 strikeouts to three walks and nine hits.
  • Wil Jensen continued what was a dual shutout with three scoreless innings, giving up only two walks and striking out one.  Jensen has 88 strikeouts to 39 walks in 83.0 innings this season, with a 2.60 ERA in his first season primarily being a reliever.
  • With 6 games left, Richmond has a 5.0 game lead over Bowie for the overall standings.  A combination of two Richmond wins or Bowie losses, and Richmond will clinch a playoff spot.

Top Eugene Performances:

  • Right fielder Jared Dupere was 3-for-4 with a home run and a stolen base.  That’s his 12th home run of the season in 99 games, 93 in High-A.  He has a batting line of .246/.313/.428 with 149 strikeouts to 29 walks.
  • First baseman Andrew Kachel was 2-for-3 with two doubles with a walk and a strikeout.  That doubles Kachel’s doubles total in Eugene after 11 games, giving him four.  His batting line is up to .250/.317/.361, with four walks to 14 strikeouts in High-A.
  • Starting pitcher Trevor McDonald gave up two runs in 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  That raised his ERA up to 0.96 from the 0.53 it was at in High-A.  In 37.2 innings at Eugene, he has 39 strikeouts to eight walks in 37.2 innings.
  • This is the final game for Eugene in 2022.  The Emeralds, after winning the Northwest League the past two seasons, finishes exactly 66-66 overall, in 3rd place in the second half, and in a 3-way tie for second in the first half.

Top San Jose Performances:

  • First baseman Justin Wishkoski led the team in hitting, going 3-for-5 with one double and one strikeout.  In 12 games since joining San Jose, Wishkoski is 9-for-43 (.209) with one double and one home run, but with seven walks to five strikeouts.
  • Third baseman Charlie Szykowny was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and a strikeout, and made a pair of errors.  Szykowny is hitting .239/.340/.304, with three doubles, and five walks to eight strikeouts.
  • Starter Dylan Cumming had a rough game, giving up four runs in 2.0 innings, allowing three hits (two home runs), one walk, and one HBP, while striking out four.  It’s a rough end to a good season, bumping his ERA from 2.60 to 2.93, with 86 strikeouts to 36 walks in 92.0 innings.
  • San Jose struggled in the second half, finished in 3rd place in the North Division at 28-38 and 15.0 games behind first place Modesto.  However, San Jose won the first half, and will go to the playoffs.  They will play Game 1 of the best-of-3 series on Tuesday, Sep. 12th in Modesto, and then return to San Jose for Game 2 on Thursday the 14th, and Game 3 if need on Friday.  The winner will continue on Sunday to face the winner of the South Division Series for a best of three, starting up north and finishing with up to two games in the south.
