The Giants have signed their 2020 first round pick, Patrick Bailey, and have added him to the 60-Man Player Pool for the 2020 season.

The catcher will give the Giants five catchers in the 60-Man Pool, alongside Buster Posey, Tyler Heineman, Rob Brantly, and fellow top prospect Joey Bart.  Reports are that Aruba native Chadwick Tromp is flying to San Francisco and will also be added to the pool.

Bailey signed for a $3.8 million dollar bonus, under the slot value for the #13 overall pick by $400k.  He is the first player the Giants have officially signed from the 2020 draft, although they have also signed six undrafted free agents.

For Bailey, it’s unlikely the Giants will consider him an option in the major leagues this season.  Like some of the other prospects added to the 60-man pool, his job will be to get as much experience and development as he can without playing games.  The Giants will not want to burn a year of his service time before he becomes a free agent by having him appear in the Majors too soon, especially as they are trying to build a core of young players that will stick together for a long time.

The $400k saved on Bailey’s slot value is a significant discount that the Giants will need to help sign their third round pick, Kyle Harrison, to an overslot deal.  Reports are that Harrison agreed to a $2.5 million bonus, far over the slot value of $710,700 of Harrison’s #85 overall pick.  The Giants now need to find more saved money elsewhere.  Adding in the 5% overage on their bonus pool that the Giants can spend without giving up draft picks, and the Giants have just over $1.5 million freed up for Harrison.  They’ll need to find another million dollars saved among their other picks.
