GiantFutures 2022 Ranks: #3 Second Baseman

Performance: Signed in the “2020” international class (which was delayed until January 2021), Cardozo made his professional debut playing in the Dominican Summer League, and was one of the Giants’ most regular players at the level.  In 42 games, he hit .300/.377/.392 with ten doubles, one triple, but no home runs.  He also drew 15 walks to 16 strikeouts, and stole eight bases in eleven attempts.

Strengths and Weaknesses: Unfortunately, there haven’t been any published scouting reports on Cardozo, but his performance in the DSL stood out.  As a 17-year old, he had the kind of plate discipline numbers you like to see from a young player.  It’s also worth noting that even though he didn’t have any home runs, he did have a 28.2% XBH rate.  At 17 years old, he could grow some of those doubles he hit into home runs as he gets stronger.

Defensively, Cardozo’s numbers were solid, with five errors in 41 games at second.  He also added one game at shortstop, making an error there in one of his three chances.  It will be worth seeing his scouting report defensively once he makes it stateside.

2022 Outlook: As one of the team’s best performers in the 2021 DSL, Cardozo is a lock to join extended spring training in Arizona and start in the ACL.  He’ll need to prove he can keep up that patience and develop some power for the future.

Future Profile: It’s notable that in a league where players often hop positions, Cardozo played all but one game at second base, so his profile is probably there.  He could develop into a contact-first second baseman, but it’s very early to say.
