As the Giants finally released their initial “Summer Camp” roster, one name was left off the list.  The 2019 first round pick Hunter Bishop was announced to have tested positive for COVID-19.

The news was stunning, and a stark reminder that baseball is now restarting as the pandemic has begun to grow again.  Several players across baseball have tested positive.

It was noticed that Bishop was recently at the draft party for the 2020 #1 overall pick Spencer Torkelson just three weeks ago.  Bishop and Torkelson were teammates at Arizona State University.

Several notable players across baseball are opting out of playing due to the risk of contracting the coronavirus and COVID-19, including Mike Leake and Ryan Zimmerman.  It was reported by Giants PBO Farhan Zaidi that no Giants have opted out so far.

MLB is allowing all teams to have their own procedures about how to handle positive tests, and the Giants have not publicly announced their exact procedures.  What can be guaranteed is that Bishop is quarantined and will not rejoin the team for at least 14 days and maybe more, until his symptoms subside and he tests negative on two different tests that are 24 hours apart.  It is possible for Bishop to join the team’s 60-man Player Pool if he gets better soon enough.
