GiantFutures 2022 Ranks: #3 First Baseman

Performance: It was not a great season for Logan Wyatt.  He came into the season with one big question that was being put upon him, and rather than answering it, he created more questions.  Everyone knows that Wyatt has great plate discipline, but the team wanted to see Wyatt produce more power.  While Wyatt did show off that discipline (58 walks to 52 strikeouts in 289 plate appearances in 70 games at High-A), but he struggled not only with power but also contact.

Wyatt hit .238/.398/.295 in High-A, and also had ten fruitless games in the ACL.  In 70 games, he had just eight doubles, a triple, and a home run at the higher level.  Defensively, Wyatt acquitted himself fairly well at first base, but he also didn’t stand out either, and has a ways to go to be a plus defender at first.  He also played five games in left field while at Eugene.

Strengths and Weaknesses: Wyatt best tool is obviously his plate discipline, and he’s like Belt at the plate in that way, taking a lot of walks, but he could be exploited by different umpires and their strike zones.  The Giants hope that his selectiveness at the plate can turn into power by choosing better pitches to swing at.

The big change for Wyatt was that his contact hitting took a big fall.  Wyatt hit .278 overall in 2019, but hit his best was at the lowest levels even then.  He struggled to a .238 average, while unable to add any power.  It’s possible that some of the changes being made to his swing to add power might have affected his contact.

Defensively, Wyatt is a good receiver, but he still doesn’t play first base naturally.  He is athletic, and could probably have average range in left field, but he has a better shot to be above average at first base.

2022 Outlook: It’s likely we’ll see Wyatt with more tweaks to his swing back in Eugene in 2022, but with a rocket on his back if he does well in his return.  The Giants have a glut of potential first basemen at the low levels that need playing time, and moving Wyatt to Richmond if he has a hot start will help make room.

Future Profile: At his ceiling, Wyatt could be an above-average first baseman, but his 2021 did not make it look like reaching that ceiling was likely.  He could still be an average first baseman down the line, but has a lot of development to go.
