Nomar Medina, LHP
DOB: 11/23/2002
BATS: L / THROWS: L
ACQUIRED: International Signing, September 2020
LAST LEVEL: Arizona Complex League
VOLATILITY: High
GiantFutures 2023 Ranks: #10 Starting Pitcher
2022 Performance: Nomar Medina changed teams in 2022, going from the Giants Orange team to Giants Black in the Arizona Complex League and worked primarily as a starter for the first time. The result was a great season there, with a 2.22 ERA, and 70 strikeouts to 16 walks in 65.0 innings. The 19-year old led the ACL in ERA, innings pitched, was 3rd in WHIP (1.14) and 7th in batting average allowed (.243).
Strengths and Weaknesses: There’s not much in the way of scouting on Medina to know what his pitches are like. However, there’s a lot to see in his numbers. He improved his ERA a low, mostly by offering better control, dropping his walk rate from 3.1 BB/9 to 2.2 BB/9, while offering small improvements in his strikeouts and hits allowed, as well as his groundball rate.
Medina still gives up a fair number of hits, with a .243 batting average allowed, and his strikeout rate is not overwhelming, so he’ll have to rely on his pitching mix to succeed going forward.
2023 Outlook: With two successful seasons in the ACL, Medina seems like an obvious player to promote to San Jose, where he’ll work his first full season and prove that he can be a starter going forward.
Future Profile: Medina is young, so it’s hard to make any strong predictions just yet. But Medina has been one of their most successful starting prospects in the short-season leagues, and it’ll be interesting to see how he does going forward.
