GiantFutures Ranks: #3 Catcher

Performance: Genoves came into 2019 as a light-hitting catcher prospect with a good glove.  He also came into it with a body that was significantly stronger than had been seen on him before.  In 51 games played, he had nine home runs in 218 plate appearances, after having just four combined in his previous three seasons.  He had 7 home runs in Salem-Keizer, and two more after a promotion to Augusta.

On his minor league career, Genoves is a .255 hitter with a .334 on-base percentage, and hasn’t shown much fluctuation over his career in either of those numbers.  The improvement in slugging for 2019 is a promising development.

Strengths and Weaknesses: Genoves’ biggest strength is his glove.  He’s been well-reputed for his skills behind the plate since he was coming up in Venezuela.  His ability back there alone will likely be enough to propel him into a major league job at some point, as catchers are always needed, and the offensive profiles do not have the high expectations other positions do.

Genoves’ hitting has not shown a lot of upside hitting, and focused on a contact-oriented approach until 2019.  He doesn’t have the strongest plate discipline, and probably won’t ever have a high batting average, but the power that showed up in 2019 gives some potential for him having a reasonable offensive profile going forward, if he can sustain it.

2021 Outlook: Genoves made a brief appearance in 2019 at Low-A, and would have been there in 2020 for sure.  My money would be on him starting at Low-A San Jose in 2020.  His playing time may be paired with Patrick Bailey, whether it’s at the same team or opposite Single-A levels.  Either way, one of his biggest goals will be building strength and stamina for a full season, and continuing to show his power.

Future Profile: Being a defensive catcher, Genoves has a future for himself.  He’s likely got a backup catcher profile, though if his power is for real, he could be a starting catcher in the big leagues.  That is a long shot, but he has a realistic chance to have a long career, if not a high ceiling one.
