GiantFutures Ranks: #2 Starting Pitcher

Performance: Corry was the third of three high schoolers drafted at the top of 2017, but took until 2019 to truly break out.  In Augusta, he took control of his control, and psoted a spectacular 1.76 ERA with a 1.068 WHIP, and struck out 172 batters in 122.2 innings (12.6 SO/9 innings).  He still had a high walks rate (58, a 4.3 BB/9 innings rate), but he showed his effectiveness even while being wild.

Corry spent most of 2020 in Utah, working out at the Giants direction, and was invited to instructional league, where he received positive yet nonspecific reports.

Strengths and Weaknesses: Corry’s curveball is his strength.  It sits in the low-80’s with a 12-6 movement.  He can get a lot spin on his curve, and he used it effectively to get his strikeouts in Augusta.  He matches it with a tricky fastball that ranges from 92-95 MPH, which he can throw with two-seam sink, but also four-seam rise.

He also throws a changeup, which reportedly was the focus of him in the instructional league and which should be a good partner to his fastball and curve.

Of course, Corry’s control remains his biggest challenge.  He improved his walk rate from 8.1 BB/9 in his first season of 2017 down to 4.3 in 2019.  He was able to be effectively wild in Low-A, although his 14 hit batters, probably helped keep batters from being comfortable in the box.  However, he will need to be more under control for his success to continue.

2021 Outlook: Having dominated Low-A, Corry will likely be getting his next shot at High-A Eugene.  If the Giants really want to push him, a Double-A start is possible, but he did not get the raves out of instructional league enough to make me think he’s got that push.

Future Profile: Corry has quite a strikeout potential that could raise him to the front half of a rotation, with a tricky set of pitches.  His control presents a challenge, and even in the backside of a rotation, Corry could have a solid future.
