Yeah, this game sucked.  On the whole, the Giants managed just three hits, while racking up 20 strikeouts.  But hey, one of the hits was Marco Luciano hitting and hustling out a double, so….

Yeah, this game mostly just sucked.

Impressions

Shun Yamaguchi – 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO – The first batter he faced lined out to center field.  The next batter grounded out to shortstop.  Yamaguchi walked his next batter.  He then got another groundball to short to end the inning.

Yamaguchi stayed in for his second inning.  The first batter of the next inning struck out swinging.  He got a sharp line drive to center from the next batter.  He then struck out the next batter with a fastball.

Yamaguhi’s had an understated spring, but he picked up one of his best outings very late in the spring.  The Giants hope he’ll stick around in the minors and stretch out into being a starter.

Phil Pfeifer – 0.1 IP, 1 SO – He came into the sixth inning with a runner on first and two out.  Pfeifer struck out the first batter he faced on a foul tip.

Hey, look who got in an appearance before spring ended!  Pfeifer was the latest of the team’s free agent signings, and he got an almost silly-sounding spring training invite with barely two weeks left.  But he got in once.

LaMonte Wade Jr – 0-2, 2 BB, 2 SO – In his first time up, he drew a walk.  In his second plate appearance, he struck out looking at a fastball on the outside corner.  He struck out swinging at a slider in his third time up.  His next plate appearance was another walk.

Wade’s working on a new swing, and this game showed the struggles, but also an improvement as he managed to pick up a couple of walks.  In this game, that was a highlight, but it is a good improvement.

Top Prospects

Marco Luciano – 1-4, 1 2B, 2 SO – His first time up, he struck out swinging at a slider.  In his second at-bat, he popped out in foul ground on the third base side.  His third time up, Luciano hit a double to left-center.  His fourth time up, he struck out swinging at a changeup.

The double was great to see, but Lucaino is still picking up the K’s.  Baby steps.

Will Wilson – 0-3, 1 SO – In his first at-bat, Wilson grounded out to third.  His next time up, he grounded out to shortstop.  His third time up, he struck out swinging at a breaking pitch.

Others

Trevor Gott – 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 SO – The first batter he faced grounded out to shortstop.  The next batter walked.  However, the base runner was caught stealing.  Gott finished off the inning with a fly ball to right.

Gott stayed in for a second inning.  That was started with a groundout to first.  The next batter flew out to center field.  The next batter got an infield single on a slow roller to shortstop.  Gott was lifted after that.
