Top Prospect Watch

#1: Kyle Harrison

This Week (AAA): 0.00 ERA, 0.65 WHIP – 7.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 4 BB, 14 SO

Season (AAA): 3.67 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, .151 Avg – 11 G, 11 GS, 34.1 IP, 18 H, 14 R, 14 ER, 2 HR, 31 BB, 61 SO

So, yeah, those goose eggs are for a two-start week, so it’s hard to see this week as anything but a success for Kyle Harrison.  And hey!  It turned into Harrison’s second Pitcher Of The Week award from the PCL.  But the one thing to keep an eye on that Harrison needs to improve is those walks, so we’ll see how it goes in the future.

#2: Marco Luciano

This Week (AA): .174/.276/.261 – 4-23, 2 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 4 BB, 6 SO, 1-1 SB-SBA

Season (AA): .176/.284/.405 – 13-74, 5 2B, 0 3B, 4 HR, 12 BB, 28 SO, 2-2 SB-SBA

This week was more of the same from Luciano for the season, except no home runs.  But low average, some doubles, some walks, some strikeouts, and a steal.  But Luciano has clear areas to improve as he gets into a groove…maybe it’s time for a new groove.

#3: Casey Schmitt

This Week (MLB): .276/.300/.345 – 8-29, 2 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 1 BB, 7 SO, 1-1 SB-SBA

Season (AAA): .313/.352/.410 – 42-134, 10 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 8 BB, 28 SO, 3-3 SB-SBA

Season (MLB): .324/.333/.479 – 23-71, 5 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 1 BB, 14 SO, 2-3 SB-SBA

Schmitt had a bit more of an average week for a major leaguer, but that’s not bad for a rookie at all.  And of course, he’s still delivering on that defense.  The one thing to look at will be those walks.  Schmitt has been very much a free-swinger, and he was also slow on the uptake of walks when he started in Triple-A.

#4: Grant McCray

This Week (High-A): .269/.375/.346 – 7-26, 2 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 5 BB, 8 SO, 4-5 SB-SBA

Season (High-A): .231/.340/.416 – 40-173, 7 2B, 2 3B, 7 HR, 25 BB, 65 SO, 20-25 SB-SBA

Seeing McCray in person this week, he spent most of the week looking very frustrated, even as he got a few hits, but looked good on Sunday, when he grabbed a couple of doubles.  He’s also picked up his stolen bases as well, which is a big part of his game.

#5: Carson Whisenhunt

This Week (High-A): 9.00 ERA, 2.67 WHIP – 3.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 3 BB, 5 SO

Season (Low-A): 3.29 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, .231 Avg – 4 G, 4 GS, 13.2 IP, 12 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 20 SO

Season (High-A): 1.77 ERA, 0.79 WHIP, .118 Avg – 5 G, 5 GS, 20.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 8 BB, 29 SO

This week was Whisenhunt’s first really rough game at High-A Eugene, though he still gets his strikeouts.  He just wasn’t sharp with his changeup, and that left batters sitting on his fastball, and they feasted on him for the first time in High-A.

#6: Vaun Brown

This Week (AA): .353/.421/.529 – 6-17, 1 2B, 1 3B, 0 HR, 2 BB, 6 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA

Season (Low-A): .412/.500/.529 – 7-17, 2 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 2 BB, 5 SO, 3-3 SB-SBA

Season (High-A): .300/.391/.550 – 6-20, 2 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 2 BB, 5 SO, 2-2 SB-SBA

Season (AA): .333/.407/.583 – 8-24, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 2 BB, 11 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA

The Giants are being very cautious with Brown, barely playing back-to-back days in Double-A.  But when he does play, he hits, and now he’s driving the ball a bit more, too.  He’s also racking up the strikeouts, but you can’t argue with the production at this point.

#7: Luis Matos

This Week (AAA): .231/.310/.269 – 6-26, 1 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 3 BB, 1 SO, 2-2 SB-SBA

Season (AA): .304/.398/.443 – 35-115, 7 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 17 BB, 12 SO, 9-13 SB-SBA

Season (AAA): .313/.365/.458 – 15-48, 3 2B, 2 3B, 0 HR, 4 BB, 2 SO, 2-2 SB-SBA

Matos had one big 3-hit game, but overall it was a bit of a down week for him, in terms of making contact.  But Matos is still getting more walks than strikeouts, and even added some steals for the first time in his 11 games at Triple-A.  Still, those numbers are looking good.

#8: Aeverson Arteaga

This Week (High-A): .250/.357/.500 – 6-24, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 3 BB, 9 SO, 1-1 SB-SBA

Season (High-A): .211/.308/.404 – 34-161, 10 2B, 3 3B, 5 HR, 21 BB, 46 SO, 4-6 SB-SBA

It was a pretty good week for Arteaga.  He had a walk-off home run, his third home run in a row going back to the previous week.  But even if those numbers aren’t too great, they aren’t bad for him as he continues to perform well defensively, which will be his calling card.

#9: Cole Waites

This Week (AAA): 0.00 ERA, 0.60 WHIP – 3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 BB, 2 SO

Season (AAA): 5.63 ERA, 1.81 WHIP, .258 Avg – 17 G, 3 GS, 16.0 IP, 16 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 13 BB, 13 SO

Cole Waites had a rough time in the Majors, but since he’s come back, he hasn’t been scored upon, and this week was a solid reflection on that.  But he’s not getting a lot of the swings and misses, which was Waites’ big thing last season.  That’s a concern.

#10: Mason Black

This Week (AA): 16.20 ERA, 3.00 WHIP – 3.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 HR, 4 BB, 2 SO

Season (AA): 5.79 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, .242 Avg – 9 G, 9 GS, 32.2 IP, 30 H, 23 R, 21 ER, 6 HR, 14 BB, 41 SO

Well, it was another rough outing for Mason Black.  That’s three rough starts in a row, and he has a 6.87 ERA overall in May.  Hopefully a new month will turn it around.

System Risers (To be chosen and replaced after each month)

Tyler Fitzgerald

This Week (AAA): .250/.318/.300 – 5-20, 1 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 2 BB, 2 SO, 4-4 SB-SBA

Season (AA): .324/.410/.588 – 22-68, 6 2B, 3 3B, 2 HR, 9 BB, 22 SO, 3-3 SB-SBA

Season (AAA): .305/.391/.576 – 18-59, 5 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 9 BB, 15 SO, 6-6 SB-SBA

After a week and a half off, Tyler Fitzgerald came back and had a solid week.  Overall, it brought his numbers down, but he did get a lot of steals on the way.  Fitzgerald has responded to his promotion well.

Carson Ragsdale

This Week (High-A): DNP

Season (High-A): 2.93 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, .190 Avg – 7 G, 7 GS, 27.2 IP, 19 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 42 SO

That’s now two weeks we haven’t seen Ragsdale.  There’s no news on why Ragsdale has been out, but he hasn’t been put on the injured list.  Hopefully he’ll be back soon.

Kai-Wei Teng

This Week (AA): 12.91 ERA, 1.83 WHIP – 7.2 IP, 11 H, 11 R, 11 ER, 2 HR, 3 BB, 10 SO

Season (AA): 5.09 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, .277 Avg – 9 G, 9 GS, 35.1 IP, 29 H, 22 R, 20 ER, 3 HR, 14 BB, 52 SO

Two starts this week for Teng, and…it was not good.  Teng seems to have lost all his magic from April.  Hopefully a change of month will get Teng back on track.

Wade Meckler

This Week (AA): .333/.500/.333 – 1-3, 0 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 1 BB, 1 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA

Season (High-A): .456/.494/.633 – 36-79, 6 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 6 BB, 9 SO, 2-3 SB-SBA

Season (AA): .333/.407/.333 – 8-24, 0 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 3 BB, 2 SO, 1-1 SB-SBA

Meckler played in just one game this week, on last Tuesday, but hasn’t been seen since, getting placed on the injured list on May 26th.  Hopefully whatever put him on the shelf isn’t too serious.

Patrick Bailey

This Week (MLB): .360/.385/.600 – 9-25, 3 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 1 BB, 6 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA

Season (AA): .333/.400/.481 – 18-54, 2 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 6 BB, 13 SO, 2-2 SB-SBA

Season (AAA): .216/.317/.353 – 11-51, 1 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 7 BB, 15 SO, 1-1 SB-SBA

Season (MLB): .355/.375/.645 – 11-31, 3 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 1 BB, 7 SO, 0-0 SB-SBA

Another call-up, and Patrick Bailey has continued to do well in the Majors.  So well in fact, the question is, will Bailey be sent back down when Joey Bart comes back from injury?  That is a very good question…Stay tuned.
