AAA: Sacramento 10, El Paso 3

Sacramento Notes:

  • A 6-run 6th inning powered Sacramento breaking a 3-game losing streak.  Heliot Ramos started off the scoring with a sacrifice fly, and Casey Schmitt had an RBI single, but then Armando Alvarez had a 3-run double to break things open, finishing up a Clint Coulter RBI single to cap off the scoring.
  • Casey Schmitt led the Sacramento offense with three hits in five at-bats with a double.  Through the season’s first six games, Schmitt is batting .308 with three doubles, but with eight strikeouts to no walks.
  • 1st baseman Armando Alvarez led the team with four RBI behind his 3-run double and a sacrifice fly.  He was 1-for-3 with a walk on the day.  Through five games, he has a .267/.429/.467 batting line with a double and a triple.
  • Free agent signee Clint Coulter went 1-for-4 with a stolen base.  Coulter has a nice .375/.500/.375 batting line through five games, going 6-for-16 with two walks to two strikeouts.
  • Heliot Ramos was 1-for-4 with a sacrifice fly, and two RBI.  Through six games, Ramos is batting an empty .304 with a .308 OBP and a .304 OBP.
  • Mauricio Llovera took the opener role with a scoreless first inning, allowing a hit and a walk with one strikeout.  Llovera’s whittling down his ERA, currently sitting at 6.00 after 3.0 innings, with two runs on three hits, one walk, and four strikeouts.  Llovera was sitting 93-95 with his fastball and his slider was 81-84 mph, but he didn’t get a single whiff on any of his 22 pitches.
  • Sam Long got bit by the control bug that’s been hitting Sacramento pitchers, as he walked three and gave up three hits, leading to three runs in 1.2 innings with just two strikeouts.  Long has allowed five runs in 4.1 innings (10.38 ERA) with four walks to four strikeouts.  Long was throwing his fastball just 91-94 MPH, down a couple of ticks from last season.
  • Nick Avila picked up the relief win despite allowing a run on one hit and two walks, the one hit being a solo home run.  He also struck out one.  Avila’s fastball sat between 91-94 mph.
  • After walking an average of nearly 12 batters every nine innings much of the season, Sacramento gave up just six walks to striking out seven in 9.0 innings tonight.

San Jose Notes:

  • San Jose blew the lead in the 9th inning in this one, going into the 9th  with a 3-1 lead, but after two hits to lead off the inning, the game-tying run came across on a wild pitch.  In the 10th inning, a 2-run home run by Fresno gave them the win.
  • 2nd round pick Carson Whisenhunt started Opening Day for the Giants, giving up a run on three hits and getting four strikeouts with no walks allowed in 3.0 innings.  Whisenhunt ranked around the back of most people’s top 10 prospects and hadn’t allowed a run in 7.2 innings in his brief 2022 debut.
  • 5th round pick Liam Simon had an impressive start to his 2023 season, going 4.0 scoreless innings, striking out six and giving up just three hits and no walks.  Simon had a 2.38 ERA in six games in his 2022 debut over 11.1 innings, with 12 strikeouts to six walks.  Simon threw 48 pitches and got 16 whiffs, exactly a third of his pitches.
  • The only extra-base hit in Game 1 was San Jose native and 16th round pick DH Andrew Kachel, who was 1-for-4 with a double.  Kachel hit .306/.409/.333 in 13 games in 2022, with seven walks to six strikeouts.  He also had just one double in 2022 as well.
  • Third baseman Thomas Gavello was the only Giant with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with two singles and a strikeout.  The 13th round pick is another bay area native, from Antioch, and hit .200/.364/.320 (5-for-25) in his 2022 debut of nine games.
  • In contrast to Sacramento, San Jose pitchers walked just one in 10.0 innings, and struck out 16.
