On the River Cats home opener, the team wore their gold-trimmed jerseys to celebrate their Triple-A Championship from 2019, but the team was held back in their return to California.  The River Cats collected just three hits, although two of those hits were home runs.  In the second inning, Jason Vosler hit a home run deep to right field to break open the scoring.  In the ninth, Thairo Estrada opened the inning with a home run to get the River Cats to within 1.

The Aces, however, were also held back, except for one big inning.  That inning came against Gregory Santos.  The inning was led off by a bunt single, followed by a sharp single to right.  Santos then hit a batter to load the bases.  With the bases loaded, Santos gave up a pair of productive groundouts plus another soft single, which let all three runs score.  That ended up being all the runs they would get.

Other Notes:

  • The biggest news of the game might be that Joey Bart didn’t last the entire game.  After the fifth inning, Bart was replaced by Chadwick Tromp.  There was no apparent injury or other reason.  The speculation is that Bart may be getting called up to replace Curt Casali, who was hit on the elbow in Thursday morning’s game in Cincinnati.
  • Tyler Beede made another rehab start, and was not looking very sharp.  He gave up only two hits, but walked four, and left the third inning with two out and the bases loaded.  Out of 4 rehab starts so far, it was the first time Beede had given up multiple walks.  Beede also hit a new high in pitches with 53 in a game.
  • Tyler Cyr was the only pitcher for the River Cats other than Beede who went more than one inning.  He continues to struggle with control, but now has nine strikeouts against seven walks in 8.1 innings of work.

The Squirrels ended up with a quiet game on this one.  Starter Gerson Garabito struggled through the third inning, giving up a season-high five runs and seven hits.  That left the game to the bullpen, but Trenton Toplikar came up big with his longest outing of the season at four innings.  The former starter averaged 4.1 innings an outing in 2019, so he was well-suited for going 4.0 in this game in relief.

Other Notes:

  • Two days ago, Heliot Ramos had his first multi-hit game since the first week of the season.  Yesterday, Ramos had his first multi-walk game of the season with three.  He now has nine walks to 18 strikeouts in 62 plate appearances this season.
  • Jason Heyward got his first game with two hits and first with an extra-base hit since his first game of the season on May 11th.

A thrilling pair of comebacks fell short for the Emeralds in the end.  Down 3-0 after four innings, the Emeralds got one run on a passed ball in the fifth, followed by an RBI single by Ismael Munguia to make it 3-2.  A Diego Rincones solo home run in the 6th tied the game.  Eugene fell behind in the seventh, but tied the game in the 9th when pinch-hitter Logan Wyatt knocked in the tying run on an RBI groundout.  In the top of the 11th, the Emeralds took their first lead, as Javeyan Williams hit a 2-run double.  But in the bottom of the 11th, a sacrifice fly gave the Dust Devils a run, and then they got a 2-run double of their own to win the game.

Other Notes:

  • Diego Rincones hit his first home run since May 9th.  In 13 games, he’s only three home runs short of his career high, reached twice before in both 2019 (in 124 games) and 2018 (in 61 games).
  • Nick Morreale struck out nine in five shutout innings his last time out.  This time, he struck out just 6 in 3.2 innings.  The difference in the games has been walks.  He’s walked three in each of the two games where he’s given up runs, but didn’t give up any walks when he kept the other team scoreless.  Of course, giving up more hits did not help either.
  • R.J. Dabovich continues to collect strikeouts, with 13 in five innings.  That’s 13 strikeouts out of 20 total batters faced so far this season.

Kyle Harrison got into his third start of the season, and remained effectively wild.  He dropped his walks to his lowest total of the season (1), but also hit two batters to keep offering free passes.  That, combined with a season-high in hits (3) allowed two runs.  But Harrison also kept striking people out, a new high of 8.  In 9.0 innings this season, he’s struck out 22 and walked nine, and given up just six hits…and hit four batters.

That would be enough for San Jose, who broke a 2-all tie in the 7th inning with a little help.  Luis Toribio led off the inning with a single.  But he advanced to third on a pair of balks, and then came in on Garrett Frechette to score what would be the winning run.

Other Notes:

  • Ricardo Genovés picked up his first home run of the season, and just his second extra-base hit as he also has one double.  With the 2-hit night, Genovés is batting .302/.348/.395 on the season.
  • After a rare off-day, Matos once again picked up multiple hits.  His 0-for-3 on Wednesday was his first game without multiple hits since May 6th.  His batting line sits at .379/.397/.586.
  • Tyler Flores’ 3-hit game has him batting .357 overall, but he’s gotten into just four games so far this season.
  • Austin Reich’s three strikeouts gives him 17 on the season in 9.1 innings, with just six walks.  He hasn’t walked anyone since May 13th, during which time he’s thrown four innings over two appearances.
