With their starting pitcher Scott Kazmir scratched, the Cats pithing staff had ups and down in its games. Reliever Francisco Leone was great in a 2-inning start, striking out five of the seven batters he faced. But from there, every other pitcher allowed runs, and with seven pitchers throwing, that was a lot. Phil Pfeifer struggled after he committed an error on a bunt attempt, leading to three unearned runs, and six total eventually on his stint.
Other Notes:
- Joey Bart, who was removed from Thursday night’s game in the 5th inning for no apparent reason, was once again missing. He wasn’t a part of any official transactions.
- LaMonte Wade, Jr. picked up his second home run of the season, both in the last four games. He had five home runs total in 87 games in 2019, hitting just .240 in that season. He is hitting .273 this season.
- The start for Francisco Leone was the first in 10 seasons of his professional career. He’s got 12 strikeouts with two walks in 7 innings so far this season.
- Thairo Estrada picked up his fourth double to go with four home runs in his 12 games this season. He was 2-for-12 over his last three games before his 3-hit performance on Friday.
- Kervin Castro didn’t give up a hit, but he walked two and hit a batter before giving up an out, and a sacrifice fly gave his record a run on it without any hits.
- Pitcher Nick Tropeano had his contract purchased by the Giants, replacing Camilo Doval, who was sent back to the River Cats. The Giants designated Trevor Hildenberger for assignment, after having claimed him off waivers from the Mets on May 18th.

The Flying Squirrels rode two big home runs to a win on Friday. They were down 4-2 in the fifth inning, when the inning was led off by two walks. Heliot Ramos came up, and hit a 3-run home run, his first home run since May 6th, the third game of the season. That was part of his second multi-hit game in his last three he’s played.
In the 7th, with the Squirrels still up 5-4, the team had two outs when Bryan Torres singled, and Heliot Ramos doubled him home. After a walk put two runners on, David Villar hit a 3-run home run of his own. It was Villar’s fourth of the season, and his first hit after three hitless games. That put the Squirrels up 9-4 for the final score.
Other Notes:
- Tristan Beck got the win, but gave up four runs for the second game in a row. Beck’s got 17 strikeouts against seven walks in 18.1 innings, and gave up two home runs in this game, giving him four given up on the season.
- Working in relief, Norwith Gudino went a season-high three innings, all shutout innings. Gudino’s got 15:4 K:BB ratio over 9.2 innings, and holding batters to a .121 batting average.

Eugene picked up a tight victory in this game. They were behind 2-1 in the 7th when catcher Brandon Martorano got a single to lead off the inning, and an Ismael Munguia sacrifice bunt led to an error, and after a productive out with Simon Whiteman tied the game with an RBI groundout. That led to a tie game in the ninth. Martorano, the catcher, led the inning off with a triple, which was followed by a walk and a hit batter to load the bases. Two strikeouts later, it looked like they might be left tied, but a wild pitch allowed Martorano to score. The batter, Patrick Bailey, walked on another pitch in the dirt, but Ismael Munguia tried to score as the pitch squirted away, but got caught in a rundown to end the inning.
There was more drama in the bottom half, as the first batter was hit by a pitch by Jose Marte. The next batter appeared to be hit by a pitch as well, but was called back when it was ruled he had attempted to bunt on the pitch. That batter struck out, but the next one hit a ball to short that hit the lip of the grass and squirted away from the shortstop Will Wilson for a hit. But Marte was able to shut things down the rest of the way with two more strikeouts, and get the Ems the win.
Other Notes:
- Brandon Martorano’s triple was the second of his career, as he picked one up in the Arizona League in the summer of 2019.
- Conner Nurse picked up the start, and got five strikeouts in five innings. On the season, he’s got 15 with 7 walks in 13.1 innings. He’s struggled with giving up big flies so far, having given up one in each of his three starts this season, but he’s holding batters overall to a .239 average overall.
- Jose Marte struck out the side, through giving up a single. Marte has 14 strikeouts in 6.1 innings, and still has yet to give up a walk this season.

Yeah, not going to lie, this was just an ugly game on all fronts. In the first inning, a leadoff walk issued by Giants starter Prelander Berroa was followed by an error by Marco Luciano. After a strikeout, a single led to an error by Luis Matos. The two errors led to five unearned runs behind scored, and Berroa not getting out of the first inning. On offense, only two players got hits, with three hits going to Abdiel Layer, and just one hit for the rest of the team (going to Edison Mora).
Other Notes:
- Abdiel Layer is on quite a run. Over the last five games, Layer has gone 10-for-21 with a double and four home runs
- After going hitless in his first three games, Edison Mora has picked up a single in each of this last two games.
- Prelander Berroa’s ERA went down from 3.00 to 2.79 in this game, but his average allowed jumped from .273 to .341 and his WHIP jumped from 1.67 to 2.17.
