Sacramento opened up its scoring with a lot of home runs, but in the end, it just took some baserunning to win the game.  In the third inning of a scoreless game, Mitchell Tolman hit a leadoff home run.  The next inning, Jason Krizan led off the inning with a home run, followed by Joe McCarthy hitting one back-to-back, and the River Cats had a 3-0 lead.  Reno would tie it up heading into the ninth inning, and there, Sacramento didn’t lead off the inning with a home run, but got a one-out walk to Bryce Johnson.  That was followed by a Thairo Estrada walk, moving Johnson to second.  During the next at-bat, Johnson stole third base, and the catcher threw the ball away trying to catch him, allowing Johnson to scamper home and score the winning run, for Sacramento’s first home win.

Other Notes:

  • Joe McCarthy has begun to wake up, batting 6-for-18 (.333) with a double and two home runs over his last five games.
  • Jason Krizan has just two home runs, but also is in a tie for the team lead with 6 doubles.
  • Shun Yamaguchi easily had his best start with Giants, allowing just one hit while striking out nine.  Yamaguchi is holding opposing batters to a .180 batting average, but has struggled with walks, giving up nine in 14.1 innings so far.
  • Camilo Doval made his Triple-A debut, coming into the game with one out and a runner on second.  He gave up a pair of singles, and with the bases loaded, gave up a 2-run double play (yes, two runs and two outs) before getting a strikeout to end the inning.  Doval had a 7.59 ERA in the Majors before being sent down.
  • James Sherfy had another scoreless outing for Sacramento.  In 7.2 innings, he’s only given up three hits and a walk, while having struck out 11.

The Flying Squirrels took way too long to get onto the scoreboard in this game, wasting a strong start by Sam Long.  Long struck out half of the 14 batters he faced in four innings of work.  A pair of doubles and an error led to two runs against him, but otherwise, he shut down Bowie.  The problem was that the Squirrels spent muc of the game peppering around hits but not stringing them together.  Richmond didn’t score until they were down 4-0 in the ninth.  It took two leadoff walks and a wild pitch to set up, and Heliot Ramos hit a 2-run single that was too little too late.

Other Notes:

  • Long has gone four innings in each of his past three starts.  He’s got 22 strikeouts against four walks in 15 innings this season.
  • Patrick Ruotolo game up runs for just the second time this season, but did it in a familiar way.  He’s given up just two hits in eight innings this season, but both hits have been home runs.
  • Heliot Ramos saved his only hit for a big one, knocking in the team’s only runs.  Despite batting leadoff this season, Ramos has 11 RBI, good for second on the team behind David Villar’s 12.

RF Franklin Labour: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 SO, 1 SB (1)
DH Will Wilson: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 SO

SP Caleb Kilian: 7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 SO
RP Ryan Walker: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 1 HBP
RP R.J. Dabovich: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO

Caleb Kilian is good.  That’s the entire story.

Okay, I suppose I have to write more.  But Kilian had one of the best games of any Giants pitcher in the organization.  Among his ten strikeouts was a stretch from the 2nd through fourth innings where he struck out six consecutive batters.  The 1-hit game gives Kilian a 1.25 ERA through four starts, with 32 strikeouts to one walk in 21.2 innings, and three runs on nine hits.  Ryan Walker and R.J. Dabovich each contributed a scoreless inning with two strikeouts to finish the game, with the only other baserunner coming from Ryan Walker hitting a batter.

The game’s only run came in the first inning, as Will Wilson walked, moved to second on a Logan Wyatt groundout, and then scored on a Franklin Labour steal.  That was all they needed, and all they got.

Other Notes:

  • Franklin Labour had the offense’s only 2-hit day.  He’s been struggling early this season, with this 2-hit game breaking a five-game hitless streak that saw his early batting average dip to .171.
  • Ryan Walker added two strikeouts to his total, giving him 15 in 7.2 innings, compared to 1 walk.  In 2019, he had 61 strikeouts and 18 walks in 59.0 innings in Augusta.
  • R.J. Dabovich has 15 strikeouts to three walks in six inning this season, and the only hits he’s given up have been home runs.

RP Justin Crump: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO

San Jose used 2-out rallies to come back in this game to get to extra innings, and then took it in extras.  In the 7th, down 4-1, Luis Toribio led things off with a 2-otu double, and scored on a single by Garrett Frechette.  Jimmy Glowenke doubled Frechette to third, and after a walk, Luis Matos hit a 2-run single to tie the game.

In the 10th, with the runner Glowenke placed on second, the Giants couldn’t get a hit, with Glowenke moving to third on a fly out.  But Fresno helped them out, with a wild pitch that let Glowenke score.  That ended up being the only run in extra innings.

Other Notes:

  • Abdiel Layer’s leadoff home run gives him a California Low-A West League-leading five home runs, which he’s hit in only eight games.  Almost everyone else in the league who has at least three home runs has played in at least 14 games.  (The exception is Aldrich De Jongh of Rancho Cucamonga, who has three home runs in six games.)  Layer has now matched his previous career high in home runs, which he hit over 40 games in the Arizona League in 2019.
  • Carson Ragsdale’s nine strikeouts were an easy season-high.  Ragsdale has struggled since he went five innings with one hit and one walk in his season debut.  The runs and hits were still here, but he started showing more strikeout stuff.  He has 23 in 14 innings, with just four walks.
  • Though he kept runs off the board, Clay Helvey had one of his roughest appearances of the season.  The three innings were his longest, and the three walks allowed doubled his season total (though one walk was intentional).  He now has nine strikeouts against six walks in 8.1 innings this season.
  • Ricardo Genovés had his second multi-hit game in a row, and has a .313/.353/.396 batting line so far this season, but just one double and just one home run.
  • Garrett Frechette’s two hits were his first multi-hit game of the season.  He’s still hitting just 7-for-41, and has 15 strikeouts without a walk yet drawn.
