A day after San Francisco had a bullpen day, it was Sacramento’s turn.  And despite a rough start, it worked out.  Tyler Cyr made his first professional start, and though he wasn’t perfect, Cyr was getting strikeouts galore, getting five of his six outs on the K.  The bullpen had some struggles, notably Gregory Santos giving up a double on his second pitch of the night, leading to a 3-run inning.

But the Giants’ runs came in droves.  In the third, just ahead of Reno’s big inning,   Joey Bart had a 2-run single, followed by Braden Bishop’s RBI single.  In the fifth, Justin Bour had a 2-run home run, and reliever Sam Selman had a 2-run double to nail down a fourth run inning that basically won them the game.

Other Notes:

  • With the start, Tyler Cyr raised his K/9 rate over 1, with 18 strikeouts to 15.0 innings, but also has 11 walks.
  • Gregory Santos has allowed five runs over his last two outings (1.2 IP), on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts.  He’s giving up a batting average of .326.
  • Bryce Johnson’s 3rd home run puts him more than halfway to matching his career high of 5, set in 2019.
  • Joey Bart’s single was his first of June, through 13 at-bats.

LF Sandro Fabian: 3-4, 1 R
RF Andy Sugilio: 2-4

RP Mac Marshall: 1.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO
RP Matt Seelinger: 2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO
RP Frank Rubio: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO

Bluntly honest: This was a bit of a punchless game for Richmond, and even their runs scored were both unearned.  Out of seven hits, none went for extra bases, and two players hogged five of the hits.  Sandro Fabian figured into both runs, though.  In the sixth, it was his 2-out drive to left field that led to a fielding error that let the first Squirrels run score.  In the ninth, he led off the inning with a single.  The next batter, Frankie Tostado, hit into what should have been a double play.  However, the second baseman threw the ball away, and Fabian hustled to score all the way from first on the play.

Other Notes:

  • Phil Pfeifer appeared in Double-A for the first time this season after being sent down from Triple-A.  Pfeifer had an 11.25 ERA in five games, 12 innings of work at Triple-A.  When he last pitched in 2019, Pfeifer had a combined 2.97 ERA between High-A and Triple-A
  • It’s become a bit of a funk for Mac Marshall.  Over his last three appearances, he’s given up 10 runs, all earned, on nine hits and five walks, all in 4.1 innings.
  • Sandro Fabian had a day, with his first 3-hit game of the season.  That bumped his average to the highest level it’s been all season, at .258.

RP R.J. Dabovich: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO

Seth Corry had a rough outing and yet it resulted in an Emeralds win.  Corry struggled with his control again, issuing six free passes en route to a win, but he gave up the most earned runs he had in any game this season. But Eugene got some help to take a second inning lead, with a run scoring on an error that Javeyan Williams hit into and Simon Whiteman forcing in a run with a walk.  In the fifth, Tyler Fitzgerald singled in a run, and Franklin Labour singled in two runs.

Other Notes:

  • Simon Whiteman continues to get on base at a high rate, with a .430 on-base percentage, but he had a season first on Saturday: he got caught stealing, attempted to steal third.  I blame one of the broadcasters, Alex Stimson, of the Emeralds for the jinx from yesterday…
  • Seth Corry has now walked five batters in each of his last three starts, 13.1 innings.  He has 41 strikeouts to 26 walks in 24.0 innings.
  • Will Wilson picked up a double for the second straight game, and has been slowly increasing his batting average from .278 to .292 over the last week.

RP Ivan Armstrong: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 SO
RP Clay Helvey: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 SO

The Giants rode a big inning to this win.  The game was tied at 2 going into the bottom of the 7th inning.  It started with an error by the Nuts, and then Ricardo Genovés knocked in a run with an RBI double.  Marco Luciano hit an RBI single, and then an run came in on a Casey Schmitt  ball that turned into an error.  The final run came in on a wild pitch.

Other Notes:

  • Marco Luciano had his second 2-hit game in three games, raising his batting average from .268 to .275 over the span.
  • Wil Jensen had the start, matched a season high in hits allowed, but also matched it with his first game without a walk since May 13th.  He has struck out 34 and walked 7 this season in 24.2 innings pitched.
  • Ricardo Genovés picked up two more walks, giving him ten on the season to 20 strikeouts in 23 games.
  • Ivan Armstrong bounced back from allowed a run a couple of days ago to not allow any in today’s game.

Olympics Update

The United States is going to the Olympics!

Okay, to be honest, in baseball, the U.S. should expect to go. But it’s a little relief that they are, and they are doing so by going undefeated in the qualifying tournament, so who can complain? Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela are headed to the last chance tournament in Mexico. Here’s the scores from Saturday.

USA 4, Venezuela 2

Giants Prospects:
Diego Rincones (VEN): 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 SO

Dominican Republic 6, Canada 5

No Giants Prospects

Congrats to James Sherfy and Team USA, as well as Diego Rincones, and the teams of Venezuela and the Dominican Republic for still being alive. Canada put up an excellent showing, and hopefully baseball continues to grow north of our border. It’s still unclear if the Olympics will even happen, but you have to play to hope. Either way, it’s a great achievement.
