The ball was just flying out of Sacramento on this afternoon game in 90 degree weather.  Both teams combined for 5 home runs, most of them being booming no doubters.  That affected most of the Giants relievers, as three of the four gave up home runs, and all had at least one runner, which was a big part of Sacramento’s loss.

Other Notes:

  • Matt Frisbee was not able to keep away enough from contact in this game.  Although he did not allow a walk, and he did get six strikeouts, the 10 hits are a season high.  Frisbee allowed a batting average of .112 in five starts at Double-A Richmond, but has allowed a .337 batting average in four starts at Triple-A Sacramento
  • Thairo Estrada picked up his seventh game of three hits or more this season.  He’s batting .374/.435/.612 at Triple-A this season.
  • Tyler Cyr gave up his first home run since May 31st.  He’s got a 5.79 ERA, but has only allowed a .191 batting average.
  • Camilo Doval only gave up two walks, but struggled with his command throughout his appearance, giving up a monster home run.  It was the first deep fly he’d allowed since May 24th.  At Triple-A in 9.0 innings, Doval has allowed 8 walks to 10 strikeouts.
  • Jason Vosler made his first appearance since coming down from the Majors, and his first at-bat was a monster no-doubt home run to right.  He hit .222 for SF, and has been hitting .228 in Sacramento.
  • Kervin Castro had a quiet inning in relief.  Since giving up two runs on June 3rd, Castro has had five appearances (6.0 IP) without allowing a run, with two hits, two walks, and six strikeouts.

RP Norwith Gudino: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO

The Squirrels rode a great start by Caleb Killian to get this win.  Kilian only allowed four hits, two of them coming in his final inning, the 6th, ahead of a throwing error by David Villar to let his only run in.  However, Villar helped make sure it would be a win, having already hit a 2-run home run in the third inning to put Richmond on the board, and it would end up being enough runs, even though the offense continued pouring it on.

Other Notes:

  • This was Kilian’s first game in Double-A in which he didn’t allow an earned run.  In five games at Richmond, Kilian has 27 strikeouts to three walks in 29.0 innings, but he’s turned on a switch in his last two games, with 17 of those strikeouts coming across his last 13.0 innings.
  • David Villar has at least one hit in each of his last six games, and it’s his second 3-hit effort of the small streak.  He was batting .190 at the start of the streak, and is up to .238.  He also has three of his eight home runs during this streak.
  • R.J. Dabovich struck out the side.  Every out he has gotten in Double-A (3.0 Innings) has been a strikeout, with 9.  He’s faced 13 batters, with nine strikeouts, two hits allowed (one double, one home run), one walk, and one hit into an error.
  • One more crazy Dabovich note: In 15.2 total innings as a pro, he’s allowed four hits.  Three have been home runs, and the fourth was a double.
  • Heliot Ramos had a single for his only hit of the game.  For the month of June, he hasn’t had a multi-hit game yet.  But he’s turned on the speed lately, with three of his six steals coming in the last six games.
  • Simon Whiteman picked up two hits, his second 2-hit game in Double-A, which raised his average to .138, and his first extra-base hit.  He’s up to four steals in seven Double-A games without getting caught.

RP Chris Wright: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO

Kai-Wei Teng seems to be happy not to be suspended anymore.  In his second start since his sticky stuff suspension, he had his best game of the year, his second scoreless outing.  With his pitching, Eugene was able to take the early lead and hold onto it, with RBI doubles from Armani Smith in the first, and Franklin Labour in the fourth.  Will Wilson’s solo home run in the seventh, followed later by a Logan Wyatt RBI double, gave the Emeralds just enough.

Other Notes:

  • Whatever is going on with sticky stuff for pitchers, Kai-Wei Teng is just getting strong with his strikeout stuff.  He now has 48 in 30.2 innings this season (17 walks), And his three highest strikeout totals have come in his last four games, with the only outlier being the 2.0 inning performance that led to his ejection and suspension.
  • Will Wilson now has home runs in each of his last three games, giving him nine on the season.
  • With his 2-hit game, Armani Smith’s batting average in High-A Eugene (.348) is higher than his average in Low-A San Jose (.339).  Over six games, he’s 8-for-23 with two doubles and a home run.
  • Logan Wyatt broke a streak of 12 straight games with a walk, but he notched two doubles instead.  His on-base percentage was .297 when the streak started, but it’s now up to .399.  His average has also gone up from .193 to .228.
  • Ryan Walker struck out the side, although he gave up a run.  He has 24 strikeouts to four walks in 21.2 innings out of the Eugene bullpen.
  • Patrick Bailey made his return to the lineup, his first game since June 12th, due to back issues.

The power was on display for San Jose, who are now second in the league in home runs, and they were led by Alexander Canario.  Canario’s solo home run in the second inning tied the game up for San Jose.  Canario went deep again in the third, after San Jose had fallen behind, and his 2-run shot gave the Giants a 3-2 lead.  San Jose would fall behind again, 4-3, and then Marco Luciano got his turn in the fifth, hitting a solo shot to tie the game.  While there were no more home runs hit the rest of the way, San Jose got enough singles and an RBI triple from Carter Williams to win going away.

Other Notes:

  • For the first time this season, Alexander Canario has hit a home run somewhere other than in Stockton (he had four there previously).  He also drew two walks to continue his June plate discipline changes.  In 65 June at-bats, he has struck out only 13 times, and walked eight times.
  • Marco Luciano has a 7-game hitting streak, and has now picked up his second home run of the streak.  Luciano seems to be on the edge of a breakout, currently batting .283/.364/.546 this season.
  • Ryan Murphy had his shortest outing of the season in terms of innings, giving up five hits and two walks in 3.1 innings.  He’s now giving up four home runs in his last three starts (out of six total home runs this season).
  • Luis Matos had his first 3-hit game since May 7th.  He now has a 14-game hitting streak, and is up to a .306 batting average.
  • The five strikeouts by Clay Helvey were his most in a game this season.  Helvey has 34 strikeouts in 22.1 innings, with 12 walks.
