With all the A-Ball teams off, the rookie leagues got a moment to shine, and the DSL’s Carlos Gutierrez made the most of it, getting on base everyone one of his six times at the plate.  In the ACL, Samir Chires led a shutout by the ACL Giants staff.

Top ACL Giants Black Performances:

  • First baseman Brady Whalen was 1-for-3 with his first home run of his rehab stint.  In ten games, Whalen now has three doubles and one home run while batting .314/.400/.486.  He had two home runs in seven games at Richmond earlier in the season before he went down in early June.
  • Right fielder Jadiael Maduro was 1-for-3 with his own home run, his first of the summer in 26 games.  With three doubles and a home run, he’s batting .265/.351/.353.
  • Starting pitcher Ubert Mejias had two scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  In his first pro season, he now has a 3.13 ERA over nine games, with 33 strikeouts to 14 walks in 37.1 innings.

  • Second baseman Jean Carlos Sio was 1-for-4 with a home run, and two strikeouts.  That gives Sio three home runs in 33 games this season.  He has three doubles and two triples as well, with 20 walks to 23 strikeouts, and is batting .286/.390/.420.
  • First baseman Javier Castillo was 2-for-4 with a double and a strikeout.  Castillo now has eight doubles in 23 games, and has a batting line of .311/.391/.419.
  • Starting pitcher Samir Chires went 4.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk, with five strikeouts.  That lowers his ERA to 5.40, and has 33 strikeouts to 17 walks in 33.1 innings.

  • Center fielder Carlos Gutierrez had a perfect day at the plate, going 4-for-4 (with all singles), plus a walk and a HBP, and stole three bases.  That gives Gutierrez six steals in six attempts in 10 games played this summer.  The four hits jumped his batting average up from .250 to .344, and his OBP from .400 to .488.
  • Catcher Anyelo Gonzalez was 2-for-5 with a walk and a strikeout.  After 27 games, Gonzalez has a batting line of .323/.421/.490, with 13 walks to 18 strikeouts.

  • RF Lisbel Diaz was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles in this game.  After just five games this summer, Diaz is 8-for-18 (.444) with two home runs, with three walks to two strikeouts.
  • Starting pitcher Johan Rodriguez struck out six in 3.0 shutout innings, with one hit and two walks allowed.  He has a 5.65 ERA with 11 strikeouts to 11 walks in 14.1 innings.
  • Reliever Jorge Martinez went 4.0 shutout innings, striking out four with two hits and a walk.  In 11 games this season, all in relief, the 4.0 innings is more than an inning longer of work than he’d done previously.  In 20.2 innings, he has 24 strikeouts to nine walks.
