We don’t talk much about the ACL in these posts, but today was a big day in the ACL as several Giants 2023 draftees (and one NDFA) all made their pro debuts at the level, except one draftee who went straight up to San Jose…which 2023 draftee was it?  Meanwhile, Sean Roby’s path back up to Double-A continues successfully with a double and a home run.

AAA: Albuquerque 10, Sacramento 9

Top Sacramento Performances:

  • In a very close, high-scoring game, the only Sacramento home run belonged to Ricardo Genovés, going 1-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts.  It was Genovés’ fifth home run of the season in his 58th game.  Genovés has a .251/.351/.389 batting line after this game.
  • Center fielder Bryce Johnson went 2-for-5 with a double, knocking in a pair of runs from the leadoff spot.  Following his 4-hit game on Thursday, Johnson has pushed his batting average back above .300, and is batting .303/.374/.515 in Triple-A.
  • David Villar, playing first base, was 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, and a stolen base, his first in Triple-A.  In three games since returning to Triple-A, Villar is batting 3-for-11 (.273) with a double, and three walks to four strikeouts.
  • It was a rough game for starter Miguel Yajure, who gave up seven runs, but only three earned runs, in 3.0 innings.  He allowed five hits and five walks, and was hurt by four errors.  He struck out just two.  In seven games with Sacramento, he now has a 6.48 ERA, with 28 strikeouts to 18 walks in 25.0 innings.

Top Richmond Performances:

  • The biggest hit for Richmond was a solo home run by catcher Andy Thomas, who hit his tenth home run of the season while going 1-for-3 with a walk.  That matches his previous season-high of ten that he had in 2022, between Everett and Eugene.  He now has ten home runs and ten doubles in 76 games this season, with a line of .224/.319/.381.
  • Left fielder Wade Meckler helped up his on-base numbers by going 1-for-3 with two walks, plus a double.  That gives him 25 walks to go with 29 strikeouts, as he hits .336/.431/.450 on the season with seven doubles, two triples, and two home runs.
  • Second baseman Jimmy Glowenke went 2-for-4 with a double, his 7th in Double-A.  In 39 games since coming up to Double-A, he’s got seven doubles and four home runs with a .224/.307/.366 batting line.
  • Starting pitcher John Michael Bertrand went 5.0 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, off of four hits and three walks, with two strikeouts.  After three starts at Richmond, Bertrand’s ERA bumped up to 5.54, and he’s got ten strikeouts to five walks in 13.0 innings.

Top Eugene Performances:

  • First baseman Sean Roby had a big day, with a double and a home run on a 2-for-4 day, with two strikeouts.  That gives Roby five doubles and five home runs in 13 games with Eugene, and a batting line of .283/.333/.660.
  • Center fielder Grant McCray went 1-for-3 with a home run, and got hit by pitches twice.  It’s McCray’s first home run since July 16th.  Over his last four games, he’s 7-for-15 (.467) with two doubles and a home run.
  • Starting pitcher Reggie Crawford threw one inning, giving up just one walks while striking out two.  Crawford has made seven appearances in July, four of them in Eugene, and has gone just one inning in each of them.  He hasn’t gone over an inning since going on the IL in June.  He has a 2.25 ERA after four games, with 8 strikeouts to five walks in 4.0 innings.

Top San Jose Performances:

  • Second baseman Dilan Rosario went 2-for-4 with a home run and two strikeouts.  It was his third home run of the season in 38 games, to go with four doubles and one triple.  He has a .231/.290/.355 batting line in San Jose.
  • Shortstop Diego Velasquez was 2-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases.  That gives Velasquez 18 steals in 20 attempts over 80 games.  Velasquez has a batting line of .310/.391/.440, with 21 doubles, one triple, and six home runs.
  • Starting pitcher Gerelmi Maldonado gave up three runs in 4.2 innings, off of five hits, two walks, and three wild pitches, with six strikeouts.  Maldonado has a 4.71 ERA after 19 games, with 81 strikeouts to 40 walks in 65.0 innings.

Top ACL Giants Black Performances:

  • DH Damon Dues went 2-for-3 with a double, his first in his 13 rehab games in the ACL.  Dues has a .294/.547/.412 batting line, with 18 walks to eight strikeouts.
  • Shortstop Cole Foster, the team’s 2023 3rd round pick this season, made his pro debut, going 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Starting pitcher Seth Corry bounced back to the ACL after a couple of weeks off, going 1.0 IP, allowing just a hit while striking out one.  Corry remains unscored upon in the ACL after five games at the level, but has given up eight games in 9.0 innings in San Jose after three games at the level.

Top ACL Giants Orange Performances:

  • Left fielder Bo Davidson made his pro debut after signing as a NDFA after the 2023 draft.  Davidson went 3-for-3 with a triple and a walk in his debut.
  • Right fielder Scott Bandura was 1-for-2 in his pro debut with a home run, also collecting two walks.  Bandura was also making his debut after being drafted in the 7th round of the 2023 draft.
  • Shortstop Ramon Peralta was 2-for-4 with a double and go caught stealing once on the basepaths.  That gives Peralta eight doubles in 33 games this summer, and his batting line is up to .284/.418/.440.
  • NDFA Cody Tucker made his second appearance, not giving up a baserunner while striking out three in 2.0 innings.  He’s got 4 strikeouts to no walks in 3.0 innings so far this summer.
