The Flying Squirrels had another walkoff win, the second time in three days, with that most exciting of finishes, a walkoff sacrifice fly by Sean Roby!  But everywhere else, everything was upside down.  We had two different position players pitching and a pitcher positioning!

Top Sacramento Performances:

  • First baseman Armando Alvarez went 1-for-4 with his 11th home run on the season.  Alvarez now has 11 doubles and 11 home runs to go with a triple, and through 50 games with Sacramento has a batting line of .305/.358/.569.
  • Sacramento dealt with a lack of outfielders partially by bringing up Turner Hill from San Jose, and he went 2-for-4 with a double in his Triple-A debut.  In Low-A, Hill had been hitting .288/.384/.377 with 17 doubles and two triples.
  • Catcher Joey Bart went 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two strikeouts.  That’s his tenth double of the season, to go with five home runs, in 47 games.  Bart is hitting just .241/.345/.392 on the season.
  • Starter Keaton Winn gave up five runs in 2.2 innings, off of five hits (three of which were home runs), and struck out just three.  That raises Winn’s ERA to 5.07 after 16 games, with 64 strikeouts to 25 walks in 55.0 innings at Triple-A.
  • Chris Wright, who has been a reliever his entire career, made his position player debut in left field and batting leadoff.  Wright went 1-for-2 with a strikeout, playing just the first four innings.  As a pitcher, Wright has a 5.18 ERA with 56 strikeouts to 39 walks in 40.0 innings at Sacramento this season.

Top Richmond Performances:

  • Center fielder Shane Matheny had another strong game, going 2-for-4 with a home run, and a sacrifice fly.  It’s Matheny’s third home run in this series, and gives him nine with Richmond in 55 games.  He’s hitting .267/.394/.503 at Double-A, with nine home runs, two triples, and 13 doubles.
  • Third baseman Sean Roby was 1-for-2 with two walks, a monster home run, and the walkoff sacrifice fly.  That home run was Roby’s first home run in Richmond after six games, and his 13th overall in 47 games, including his rehab starts.  Roby is just 2-for-20 (.100) in those six games, with two walks and eight strikeouts.
  • Right fielder Victor Bericoto was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.  It’s his fourth double after 29 games, and has a batting line of .204/.259/.350 in Double-A.
  • Starting pitcher Carson Seymour had a rough start but finished strong.  He gave up three runs, all the first three batters of the game, over a total of 4.1 innings, off of five hits and two walks, while striking out seven.  It’s Seymour’s first game in the last four where he allowed more than one run.  He’s got a 3.63 ERA with 92 strikeouts and 37 walks in 96.2 innings.

Top Eugene Performances:

  • The lone home run for Eugene was by Matt Higgins, going 1-for-4 combined across the two games with the homer and two strikeouts.  Higgins has three home runs in 23 games at High-A, to go with four doubles and a batting line of .235/.315/.395.
  • Catcher Onil Perez combined to go 2-for-4 in his second and third games at High-A.  Perez is 5-for-9 (.556) with one strikeout.  He was hitting .300/.364/.403 in 62 games at Low-A.
  • Damon Dues had an interesting day, combining to go 1-4 with a double and a walk, and stealing two bases, while leaving Game 1 early, and then ending Game 2 on the pitching mound(!), where he gave up one hit and struck out one.  It’s Dues’ second appearance of the season, the last time coming last Saturday, which he struck out two in an inning.
  • Thomas Gavello made his pitching debut with an inning on the mound, allowing just one hit in an otherwise scoreless inning.  Gavello was otherwise 2-for-5 on the day playing third and second base in the two games.. He is hitting .211/.303/.228 after 17 games in High-A Eugene.

Top San Jose Performances:

  • Designated hitter Tanner O’Tremba went 1-for-4 with his seventh home run of the season.  O’Tremba now has seven home runs, two triples, and 21 doubles in 80 games at San Jose this season, with 38 walks to 75 strikeouts and a .267/.398/.428 batting line.
  • Another home run was hit by Alexander Suarez, going 1-for-4 with a strikeout.  It was Suarez’s first home run since July 25th.  In the month of August, Suarez is batting .320/.368/.460 with two doubles, a triple, and a home run.
  • Center fielder Scott Bandura was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a walk.  After nine games in San Jose, Bandura has a batting line of .387/.444/.581 with three doubles and one home run at the level.
  • Starting pitcher Nomar Medina gave up four runs, three earned, off of two hits and three walks, while striking out four.  Medina has a 5.53 ERA after 22 games this season, with 68 strikeouts to 42 walks in 81.1 innings.

Top ACL Giants Black Performances:

  • Second baseman Quinn McDaniel led the way for the team with a 2-for-3 day with a home run.  After 14 games, McDaniel has a batting line of .275/.500/.550 thanks to having 18 walks to 15 strikeouts, and now has three home runs and two doubles.
  • Third baseman Charlie Szykowny was 1-for-3 with his third double of the season.  Through 13 games, he’s hitting .256/.418/.442 with three doubles, one triple, and one home run.
  • Starter Brayan Palencia threw 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, a walk, and a HBP while walking only one.  It was his first game with the Black team, but overall in the ACL, he’s got a 6.18 ERA with 37 strikeouts to 14 walks in 43.2 innings.

Top ACL Giants Orange Performances:

  • Right fielder Bryce Eldridge was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk.  After 14 games, Eldridge is 12-for-44 (.273) with more than half his hits going for extra bases, with four home runs and three doubles, plus eight walks against 13 strikeouts
  • Third baseman Justin Wishkoski was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, but the biggest number in his box score was one strikeout.  That is his first strikeout of his pro career, 15 games into it (46 at-bats).  He has a .370/.491/.565 batting line with six doubles and one home run, plus eight walks to now just one strikeout.
  • First baseman Derwin Laya went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk as well, but also added two stolen bases.  That’s seven steals in ten attempts for Laya, who now also has five doubles and five home runs, and a .264/.350/.390 batting line
  • Reliever Lisander De La Cruz got his strikeouts, with six in 2.0 innings of work, but also gave up two runs on three hits and three walks.  On the summer, De La Cruz now has 39 strikeouts to 24 walks in 25.0 innings.

  • Left fielder Diego Villegas led his team in hitting, going 3-for-4 with a double.  That gives him seven doubles to go with one triple, but no home runs, as he’s hitting .297/.420/.396 on the summer.
  • DH Carlos Gutierrez went 2-for-5 with a double and a pair of strikeouts.  That’s Gutierrez’s fourth double to go with two triples.  He’s hitting .265/.453/.473 on the summer with 11 walks to five strikeouts.
  • Starting pitcher Marlon Franco gave up one run in 4.0 innings, off of four hits and no walks while striking out four.  Franco has a 2.68 ERA now in his third DSL season, with 30 strikeouts to seven walks in 40.1 innings.

  • Designated hitter Soyger Brizuela went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.  After 22 games, he has a batting line of .192/.234/.329 with four doubles and two home runs.
  • Starter Jose Rojas gave up two runs in 3.0 innings, off of six hits and a walk, while striking out two.  It was his first start in 14 appearances, and he has a 2.70 ERA with 22 strikeouts and nine walks in 36.2 innings.
