The yearly prospect showcase for MLB has got started as the postseason is underway in the big leagues, so at least Arizona can get some October baseball.  The Giants have sent many of their top prospect, including three first round draft picks and their top overall prospect.

While reading all these results, keep in mind the things in this excellent story in The Athletic: that there are a lot of changes to the way the games are being played. The AFL is using an automated strike zone and a strictly enforced pitch count, so a lot of players are going through adjustments

So here’s how the prospects did in their first four games of the Arizona Fall League.

Marco Luciano – 3 Games – 2-11 (.182), 1 R, 1 BB, 4 SO

As the Giants top prospect, Luciano is getting the most regular playing time at shortstop for the Scottsdale Scorpions.  Like for most of the season, Luciano is one of the youngest guys in his league, and he looked overmatched in his first game, striking out in three of his four at-bats, but he’s only struck out once in the other two games. It’s very possible some of these strikeouts were related to the new pitch clock enforcement, as to the reason he had so many in just his first game.

Will Wilson – 2 Games – 1-6 (.167), 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 3 SO

When the Giants drafted Wilson, it was thought that his versatility in the infield would be popular with the Giants braintrust.  However, his first appearance in the AFL was in a new spot: center field.  He was back in the infield for his second start, at second base.  But in both games he played, he’s been batting in the 9th spot in the order for the Scorpions.

Hunter Bishop – 2 Games – 0-6, 4 SO

It was a tough season for Bishop, who fought through injuries, and looked like his timing was off when he made a brief midseason comeback.  Unfortunately, his debut in the AFL was more of the same.  He came in midgame for his first appearance, and struck out both times he came up, and has four strikeouts in six at-bats. Bishop is another player who I think might be being affected by the pitch clock enforcement.

Patrick Bailey – 2 Games – 2-6 (.333), 1 2B, 3 SO

In the first few games in the AFL for the Giants prospects, the only extra-base hit belonged to Patrick Bailey, who picked up a double in the first game.  Bailey’s only been behind the dish in one of his two games, and was designated hitter in the other one.

Gregory Santos – 2 Games – 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 SO

Santos was the Giants’ headliner in the first game of the AFL, striking out four of the six batters he faced, in his first game back from his PED suspension midseason.  His second game was less overwhelming, but it’s been a strong start for Santos to start the AFL. Jayson Stark reported that Santos got up to 103 mph, but was throwing his fastball more regularly from 96-101 mph, with a high 80’s slider.

R.J. Dabovich – 1 Game – 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO

One inning, multiple strikeouts for R.J. Dabovich.  Just more of the regular for him as he continues to rise quickly through the system.

Cole Waites – 1 Game – 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO

Perhaps the least known of the players the Giants sent to the AFL has gotten into just one game, picking up a save and striking out two of the five batters he faced.

Seth Corry – Did Not Play

No word on the reasoning behind Corry not getting into any games yet.  Corry had a tough season, but was looking strong after taking some time off to make adjustments.
