Today, another young Giant made his debut, Kervin Castro working two innings in Coors Field.
I like Castro a lot. Before this season, his highest level pitched was in Short-A. He had some early struggles in Sacramento after a huge promotion, but has made adjustments. There’s time to go before he’ll be ready for the big leagues full-time, but there’s a lot to like.
AAA: Sacramento 10, Salt Lake 2
Sacramento Notes:
- Will Toffey hit his second home run while with Triple-A Sacramento in his first 3-hit game with the team. Toffey has a .339/.471/.464 batting line after 23 games.
- Peter Maris hit his 9th home run of the season, extending a 6-game hitting streak. He raised his batting average from .295 to .310 over the run, with a pair of home runs.
- Arismendy Alcántara added his 16th home run, his second of the month of September so far.
- Scott Kazmir had his longest start since June 24th, allowing just a pair of runs on four hits, and giving up only his 5th home run with Sacramento over 12 appearances.
- In his first game back in Sacramento, Sammy Long pitched two scoreless outings, allowing just two hits. He’s made six appearances in Sacramento, and has allowed just two runs in 18.1 IP, for his 0.98 ERA.
AA: Akron 5, Richmond 1
Richmond Notes:
- Diego Rincones hit a home run in Richmond’s first game in a week, his 10th with Richmond in his 42nd game there. He also had five with Eugene in 25 games, so he’s now more than doubled his previous season high of home runs of 7.
- Sandro Fabian was 1-for-3 with a walk. He has 10 walks to 46 strikeouts across 78 games on the season.
- Simon Whiteman was 1-for-4, getting his first hit in four games. He’s got a .249/.351/.367 batting line after 61 games.
- Michael Plassmeyer took the rough start, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks in 3.0 innings. His ERA jumped to 5.04 with Richmond after 14 starts.
- Ryan Walker made his third appearance with Richmond, but first in this most recent callup. He went two scoreless with one strikeout and one walk. He’s now allowed one run in 4.2 IP in Double-A.
High-A: Eugene 9, Everett 6
Eugene Notes:
- Armani Smith had two home runs, his second 2-HR day of the season, giving him eight home runs in Eugene. Since his promotion, Smith has been hitting .279/.352/.455 in 62 games in High-A.
- Sean Roby hit his first home run of September, after hitting eight in August. Roby is batting .232/.319/.460 on the season.
- Ismael Munguia launched a monster home run, his eighth of the season. He has hits in 15 of his last 16 games and has raised his batting line to .326/.359/.479.
- Blake Rivera was back on the mound starting for Eugene for the third time, allowing five runs on six hits, two walks, and a hit batter. He actually lowered his batting average allowed from .391 to .366 in the game.
- Austin Reich threw an immaculate inning, three strikeouts on nine pitches. Reich now has a 1.71 ERA in San Jose, with 45 strikeouts to five walks in 31.2 IP.
Low-A: Stockton 4, San Jose 2
San Jose Notes:
- Patrick Bailey’s strong run with San Jose continues with his seventh home run in 38 games with the team. His batting line is up to .319/.412/.553.
- Abdiel Layer picked up his 10th double of the season, his first extra-base hit since August 21st.
- Grant McCray picked up a single, extending his hitting streak to five games. McCray’s played 15 games in San Jose, but hasn’t had an extra-base hit since hitting a home run in his first at-bat at the level.
- Haydn King made his first start of the season in a bullpen start, going a season-high 3.0 innings, his only run coming on a home run.
ACL: ACL Giants Black 13, ACL D-backs 3
ACL Giants Black Notes:
- Jacob Gonzalez had his first 2-home run day of the season, giving him seven in the ACL this season over 27 games.
- Jared Dupere hit his second home run of the summer, both coming in his last five games. He’s got a batting line of .299/.397/.478 on the season.
- Alexander Suarez is 5-for-7 over his last two games with a pair of doubles and a pair of walks. After 47 games, he’s batting .317/.395/.518, with 14 doubles, two triples and five home runs.
- 2nd round pick Matt Mikulski made his second appearance of the season, allowing an unearned run but not giving up a hit.
- Esmerlin Vinicio worked in relief, but has gone seven straight games of at least four innings. He only struck out three, but has 66 strikeouts to 27 walks in 54.0 IP.

DSL: DSL Rangers2 11, DSL Giants Black 4
DSL Giants Black Notes:
- Onil Perez had his second multi-hit day in a row, and got his first home run of the season in his 21st game of the summer.
- Yeison Lemos picked up his fourth double of the season, after three straight hitless games. Lemos now has four doubles, four home runs, and one triple in 28 games.
- Ricardo Estrada had his worse starts of the season, giving up five runs on five hits and two walks. His ERA jumped from 2.49 to 3.25 in the game.
DSL: DSL Orioles2 7, DSL Giants Orange 4
DSL Giants Orange Notes:
- Rajean Anza had a perfect day at the plate, going 1-for-1 with a double, and drawing two walks. He’s only gotten into 11 games this season, and has seven strikeouts to four walks in 33 plate appearances.
- The start belonged to Cristofer Valenzuela, who allowed five runs, three earned, in 2.1 innings on three hits and three walks. Valenzuela has allowed 31 runs this season, 25 earned, in just 16.0 innings.
